Book Description
A witty, psychedelic, and telling novel of the 1960s Richard Fariña evokes the Sixties as precisely, wittily, and poignantly as F. Scott Fitzgerald captured the Jazz Age. The hero, Gnossus Pappadopoulis, weaves his way through the psychedelic landscape, encountering-among other things-mescaline, women, art, gluttony, falsehood, science, prayer, and, occasionally, truth. For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators. Going Up and Going Down
Author: Yitzhak (Itzik) Peleg
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing
ISBN: 0567660265
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 313
Book Description
In Going Up and Going Down Yitzhak Peleg argues that the story of Jacob's dream (Genesis 28.10-22), functions as a mise en abyme ('as a figure, trope or structure that somehow reflects in compact form, in miniature, the larger structure in which it appears', Greenstein). Close examination reveals that focusing on the vision of Jacob's dream and understanding it as a symbolic dream facilitates an explanation of the dream and its meaning. Scholars have historically classified the dream as theophany, the purpose of which is to explain how Beth-El became a sacred place, and as such the vision in Jacob's dream is generally accepted as merely ornamental, or even lacking a message in itself. Whilst Peleg does not contradict or seek to go against identification of the dream as theophany, he sees a more nuanced purpose behind its presentation. Peleg's proposal is that the description of the vision, and especially that of the movement of the angels, is not embellishment, supplementation or scenic background, of God's message, but that it directly symbolizes the path taken by the Patriarchs to and from the Promised Land. Furthermore, the narrative context and visual description in the dream in which 'Angels of God were going up and down it' appears when Jacob is on his way to Harran, that is to say, when he is about to leave Israel.

Looking Up, Looking Down
Author: Geoff Woods
Publisher: Troubador Publishing Ltd
ISBN: 1785898744
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 272
Book Description
“I am a fifty-year-old married father of two who has spent much of his life (when not interrupted by studying or work) outside, either playing sport or walking in the hills.” Geoff Woods’ first book, Looking Up, Looking Down, explores his adventures in the British hills over the past forty years. Starting as a child on Bodmin Moor in Cornwall, Geoff casts a wry eye back on his escapades in some of the more remote parts of Britain. Usually on foot but occasionally on a bike, these, without fail, involve fantastic scenery, remarkable weather, and a trip to the pub with his mates. The central theme of the book is Geoff’s long-term ambition to climb the Munros, Scotland’s 3000-foot mountains. He reflects on some of his more memorable trips, usually at Easter and on the friendships forged over a camping stove and a pint. Although Looking Up, Looking Down is not intended to be a guidebook to the British hills, it is a great way for readers to explore iconic upland areas and hidden gems of our beautiful island. It will appeal to readers who enjoy memoirs and laughing at someone else’s expense, as well as those who have an interest in outward-bound-type activities.
