Book Description
"At last someone has got the whole fascinating story together. The story of a man dedicated to music. A man like Nat 'King' Cole who was, first and foremost, a jazz musician and then, because of his unique vocal sound, became a singer. We are so lucky that he made more than a thousand recordings most of which have been remastered and brought to glowing life on CD. He is more popular today than he was when he was alive. Young people are entranced by his brilliant phrasing and understanding of some of the most famous standards ever written and his great jazz feel. "The young man who, through years of painstaking research, has dispelled unhelpful rumours and filled in so much information on Al Bowlly and that hugely musical fertile period - the era of the dance bands - is Ray Pallett. Ray is the person everyone turns to who wants to know anything about our hero. He has made it his mission to put Al's roller coaster, jigsaw of a life, together. The result of years of research is here. They Called Him Al is the ultimate encyclopaedia of Al. "Ray's regular magazine Memory Lane (see details under Acknowledgements) is the must-have publication for all fans of Al and the legendary bands and bandsmen. A forum for all those who love this sweet and lovely period of show business it constantly comes up with new lists of recorded re-issues, interviews, photographs, anecdotes and get-togethers of enthusiasts. "If They Called Him Al has turned you on then Ray's magazine will complete the job. With every issue I thank him for his ear to the ground, his nose for knowing just what us musical nostalgia buffs want to read about and, most especially, for helping us to know more about the enigmatic vocal magician, "Britain's greatest crooner" Albert Alick Bowlly." - Roy Hudd, from his Foreword

It includes the Biography of the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, his mission as a Prophet, his ranking as in the human history. Text is paragraphed by theme and theme is written in the margins on each page for easy reference. Its features include - (1) Field Testing the Communication of Divine Message: The unique feature of this translation is its field testing for over 3 1/2 years to improve the communication and understanding of the Divine Message. Translation passages were given to the New Muslim and Non-Muslim high school and college students for reading under the supervision of various Ulema (scholars). After reading, the person was asked to explain as to what he/she understood from the passage. If his/her understanding was the same as is in the Arabic Text of the Holy Qur'an then we concluded that we have been successful in conveying the Divine Message properly. If his/her understanding was different than what the Qur'anic verses were stating, we kept on rewording the translation until those verses were understood properly. It was tremendous patience on part of the participants. May Allah reward them all. (2) Simplicity: In this translation Simple Language and Direct Approach is used for appealing to the common sense of scholars and common people. (3) Understandability: There are no foot notes to refer and no commentary or lengthy explanations to read. All necessary explanations have been incorporated right there in the text with italic type setting to differentiate from the translation of the meanings of Qur'anic Arabic Text. (4) Outline of Pertinent Information: Before the start of each Srah, information relating to its Period of Revelation, Major Issues, Divine Laws and Guidance has been presented as an outline. Then a summary of the preceding events has been tabulated for the reader to understand the histo! rical background to grasp the full meaning of the Divine Message. (5) Reviews, Input and Approvals: This project was started in 1991 and initial draft completed in 1994. Then the Translation was sent to different Ulema (Scholars) in Town and throughout United States for their review and input. After their reviews and input it was sent to Jme Al-Azhar Al-Sharif in Egypt, Ummal Qur in Saudi Arabia and International Islamic University in Pakistan for their review, input and approval. This translation was published after their reviews and approvals.

The 50s: The Story of a Decade

The 50s: The Story of a Decade PDF Author: The New Yorker Magazine
Publisher: Modern Library
ISBN: 0812983300
Category : History

Pages : 786

Book Description
This engrossing anthology assembles classic New Yorker pieces from a complex era enshrined in the popular imagination as the decade of poodle skirts and Cold War paranoia—featuring contributions from Philip Roth, John Updike, Nadine Gordimer, and Adrienne Rich, along with fresh analysis of the 1950s by some of today’s finest writers. The New Yorker was there in real time, chronicling the tensions and innovations that lay beneath the era’s placid surface. In this thrilling volume, classic works of reportage, criticism, and fiction are complemented by new contributions from the magazine’s present all-star lineup of writers. The magazine’s commitment to overseas reporting flourished in the 1950s, leading to important dispatches from East Berlin, the Gaza Strip, and Cuba during the rise of Castro. Closer to home, the fight to break barriers and establish a new American identity led to both illuminating coverage, as in a portrait of Thurgood Marshall at an NAACP meeting in Atlanta, and trenchant commentary, as in E. B. White’s blistering critique of Senator Joe McCarthy. The arts scene is recalled in critical writing rarely reprinted, including Wolcott Gibbs on My Fair Lady, Anthony West on Invisible Man, and Philip Hamburger on Candid Camera. Also featured are great early works from Philip Roth and Nadine Gordimer, as well as startling poems by Theodore Roethke and Anne Sexton, among others. Completing the panoply are insightful and entertaining new pieces by present-day New Yorker contributors examining the 1950s through contemporary eyes. The result is a vital portrait of American culture as only one magazine in the world could do it. Including contributions by Elizabeth Bishop • Truman Capote • John Cheever • Roald Dahl • Janet Flanner • Nadine Gordimer • A. J. Liebling • Dwight Macdonald • Joseph Mitchell • Marianne Moore • Vladimir Nabokov • Sylvia Plath • V. S. Pritchett • Adrienne Rich • Lillian Ross • Philip Roth • Anne Sexton • James Thurber • John Updike • Eudora Welty • E. B.
