Book Description
It's well established that parents in western countries such as Australia currently do too much for their kids, albeit with good intentions. Before driving their kids to school (or station or bus stop) each morning most parents would have woken their children up, made their breakfast and lunch, depositing the latter in their schoolbags, before reminding them to get dressed and brush their teeth. All this well-intentioned activity may make for an easier life at home but it encourages children to be dependent on adults for longer. This is the exact opposite of what parents have done in the past, which is to develop their children's independence and achieve the most important parenting outcome of all - their own redundancy. There are a number of reasons for this high level of dependency parenting, including family shrinkage (parents are able to do a great deal for kids in small families), older parents (often over-concerned about their children), busy lives (it's easier to do than delegate) and a heightened fear that the world is a dangerous place for young people. While terms such as 'helicopter parents', 'bubble-wrapping kids' and 'over-parenting' are now common place, they are unhelpful and offer little direction for parents. Spoonfed Generation will explain the importance of children's independence and the vital stages to letting go. Never before has a generation been so dependent on their parents; now it's time to remove the spoon and put it back in the drawer.

Pages : 257

Book Description
A memoir sharing a lifetime's worth of lessons from a generation female cooks. Somewhere between the lessons her mother taught her and the ones she is now trying to teach her own daughter, Kim Severson stumbled. She lost sight of what mattered, of who she was and who she wanted to be, and of how she needed to live her life. It took a series of encounters with female cooks-including Marion Cunningham, Alice Waters, Ruth Reichl, Rachael Ray, and Marcella Hazan-to reteach her the life lessons she had forgotten, and many she had never learned in the first place. Some were as small as a spoonful, and others so big they saved her life-at any measure, the best lessons she found were delivered in the kitchen.

Pages : 314

Book Description
As Far As You Can Go was Julian Mitchell's third novel, first published in 1963. Its protagonist is Harold Barlow, a young stockbroker, on his way up in the world - but easily bored, desiring adventure. He accepts a commission to travel to America; and the further west he goes, the more he discovers in the way of wide open spaces and freedoms. There is, however, a limit. In an introduction written especially for this edition, Julian Mitchell describes his interest in writing 'a reverse Henry James novel, about a European discovering America rather than vice-versa.' 'Like Nabokov, but without his cynicism, Mr Mitchell sets the geography of the United States in motion.' Anthony Burgess, Observer 'This raid on the American psyche, so hilarious, yet so horrific in its implications, proves Mr Mitchell a first-rate satirist.' Telegraph

The Tenth Muse

The Tenth Muse PDF Author: Laura Marcus
Publisher: OUP Oxford
ISBN: 0191615412
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 584

Book Description
The Tenth Muse explores writings on the cinema in the first decades of the twentieth century. Laura Marcus examines the impact of cinema on early twentieth-century literary and, more broadly, aesthetic and cultural consciousness, by bringing together the study of the terms and strategies of early writings about film with literary engagement with cinema in the same period. She gives a new understanding of the ways in which early writers about film - reviewers, critics, theorists - developed aesthetic categories to define and accommodate what was called 'the seventh art' or 'the tenth muse' and found discursive strategies adequate to the representation of the new art and technology of cinema, with its unprecedented powers of movement. In examining the writings of early film critics and commentators in tandem with those of more specifically literary figures, including H.G.Wells and Virginia Woolf, and in bringing literary texts into this field, Laura Marcus provides a new account of relationships between cinema and literature. Intertwining two major strands of research - the exploration of early film criticism and theory and cinema's presence in literary texts - The Tenth Muse shows how issues central to an understanding of cinema (including questions of time, repetition, movement, vision, sound and silence) are threaded through both kinds of writing, and the ways in which discursive and fictional writings overlapped. The movement that defined cinema was also perceived as a more fragile and unstable ephemerality that inhered at every level, from the fleeting nature of the projected images to the vagaries of cinematic exhibition. It was the anxiety over the mutability of the medium and its exhibition which, from the 1920s onwards, led to the establishment of such institutional spaces for cinema as the London-based Film Society, the new film journals, and, in the 1930s, the first film archives. The Tenth Muse explores the continuities between these sites of cinematic culture and the conceptual, literary and philosophical understandings of the filmic medium.
