2020 Year of Plenty

2020 Year of Plenty PDF Author: Dr Afiniki Akanet
Publisher: Affinity Global Enterprises Limited
ISBN:
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 161

Book Description
In her usual conversational style, Dr. Akanet, through her perspective as a GP (family doctor) and mother to two young children, shares her ups and downs of 2020, while trying to move house. Moving home, particularly when it involves buying or selling a house, has been noted to be one of the three most stressful life events, and doing so during a pandemic would make it even more challenging. 2020 brought with it challenges and changes most of us never expected, taking some of us to almost breaking point. This book will take you through one family’s journey, to discover how they survived such a tough year, and reflect on whether there could really be blessings to count for 2020. Based on true events, with stories about parenting, faith, marriage, patients, estate agents and immigrant perspectives, this book will bring you smiles, tears, inspiration and hope for the days ahead. Book Reviews: “A record of the real-life experiences of one medical family as the novel Coronavirus, emanating from Wuhan in China, slowly embraced the whole world. It is often amusing and sometimes poignant in its detail of her days in the 'new normal' and very surreal world into which we were all suddenly plunged!” - Paul Sheffield “I expected a book about 2020 to be all doom and gloom, but was surprised to find myself laughing out loud at times." - Dr. Anna Nguyen (GP) “Afiniki is not only a talented mother and professional, but an eternal feel-good optimist. If anyone is going to see the good in 2020, it is going to be Afiniki.” - Trish Adudu (BBC presenter) “This book is a very interesting read, and one which I am sure will be of great interest to school students in a couple of generations time” - Margaret Greenway “There’s no doubt that 2020 will live in all of our memories as a year like no other! But what have we learned through it? And what can we take away, moving forward? Have a read of one reflection of not only what was lost this year, but also what was gained.” - Diane Rickard

Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 123

Book Description
'I know that what I've learnt in the past two years will help me for the rest of my life. My hope is that you will see yourself reflected in my own journey, and . . . consider who you will become in this new world of ours. Who we all might become.' If you're suffering from a crisis of meaning, you're not alone. In this powerful new book, future strategist John Sanei shares how he found ways to cope with the uncertainty that has been all around us in the past two years. Lockdown meant his career came to a screeching halt. He was living with his parents and then had to battle loneliness until he started to reassess who he was and what he wanted from life. Infused with empathy and personal anecdote, Who Do We Become? explores our individual responsibility to evolve into more decent, dynamic versions of ourselves, our businesses and humanity as a whole – especially in times of crisis. The book is divided into three sections. In Part 1: ANGUISH, John explores how to courageously mourn the loss of our 'normal' pre-COVID world. Part 2: ABNORMAL, shows us how to understand this new environment and recognise that uncertainty is the new normal. Then, in Part 3: ADVENTURE, John provides a toolkit for us to forge out into the new world, to succeed and recognise the signs of rebirth and renewal. Travel with John as he maps out our strange, new world and lays down a path to reframe our thinking, to recognise our discomfort, to survive and thrive.

The Social World of Galleries

The Social World of Galleries PDF Author: Alain Quemin
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing
ISBN: 1350370932
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 473

Book Description
This book presents the first detailed study of the place of contemporary art galleries and gallerists, especially within the art markets of Europe and the United States. Based on the author's field research carried out for over a decade, and combining ethnographic material with quantitative data, the book reveals the major role galleries play in the creation of art value. Despite being pillars of the art market, there has been very little in-depth research on galleries, especially when compared with the analysis of artists, critics, and dealers. Written by a sociologist who has spent a decade as an art critic, the book builds on work conducted by art historian and sociologist Raymonde Moulin from the 1960s to the 1990s. Drawing on ethnographic observations and interviews with those working in the field today, it provides a thorough and up-to-date analysis of what contemporary art galleries really are: the spaces they occupy both physically and online; their position within gallery 'districts'; their relation to art fairs and biennials; and how friendship with clients is built and trends within the business, in turn illuminating the hierarchized structure of the sector. The book concludes by addressing a significant gap in data on the art market by providing a sociological ranking of international contemporary art galleries. Offering a detailed analysis to a topic that has never been fully studied, The Social World of Galleries is essential reading for scholars and students of art sociology, art history and art business, as well as gallerists, collectors or art lovers, and artists themselves.

Year Of The Rat

Year Of The Rat PDF Author: Jorah Kai
Publisher: More Publishing
ISBN: 1959604007
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 496

Book Description
THE YEAR OF THE METAL RAT, 2020, was a time of panic, uncertainty, and great division. CHINA, VIETNAM, CANADA, SAUDI ARABIA, ITALY, ARGENTINA, AMERICA, JAPAN, AUSTRALIA, PHILIPPINES, NETHERLANDS, GUATEMALA, UGANDA, THE U.K., SINGAPORE, RUSSIA… As the pandemic spread, some wore masks and socially distanced to protect the vulnerable, while others protested all public health measures as a form of tyranny and caused loud and obnoxious mass disruptions to critical infrastructure in a jarring display of 'personal freedom.' Fake news and echo chambers enabled 'alternative facts,' while unhinged narratives and cartoonish conspiracies ran rampant, often trumping coverage of legitimate and existential converging catastrophes. In YEAR OF THE RAT, the sequel to the international best-seller 'The Invisible War' (Kai's Diary), Jorah Kai documents the world’s largest ‘Zero Covid bubble’ while the outside world handles the pandemic uniquely. Reaching out to friends across the globe, he weaves their stories together. Thirty-six writers from 33 cities in 16 countries share their daily struggles, hopes, and fears for the YEAR OF THE RAT as the SARSCOV2 virus spreads catastrophe to every corner of the globe. "It’s ... the metaphor of the yin and the yang. I’d say right now; we are in the yin. It’s a kind of disaster. It’s sad. And on the yang side... it looks like some sort of a mathematical balance that I cannot explain." - JCVD “I would have done the whole thing for a donut and a tuna fish sandwich. The money meant nothing. It was the opportunity to at least prove to myself that I wasn’t a liar, that I wasn’t living a life of disillusionment. When you think of yourself as being a very creative person, and turn around and realize you’ve been leading a lie.” - Sylvester Stallone (Rocky). "At the beginning of the pandemic, Jorah Kai led a plucky band of frontline workers and activists to fight the pandemic with science. Some called him a harbinger, others a ‘pandemic guru’ as they navigated an increasingly bizarre world of book deals, TV appearances, speaking engagements, and a recovery event with his childhood hero, martial arts movie star Jeanne Claude Van Damme. But nothing could prepare him for what came next..." - The Narrator

Profile of a Religious Man

Profile of a Religious Man PDF Author: Edwin Zackrison
Publisher: Wipf and Stock Publishers
ISBN: 1532699069
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 810

Book Description
This book is a "journey book." Sitting down at a computer and producing the story has been a grand trek. I have learned that there is a principle in nature that some things need to mellow, calm down, and soak in. The refusal of winemakers to take a wine before its time is a notion I am coming to understand. It works with writers as well. Like a fetus signaling its mother that it is time to head for the hospital, a literary work stays in the mind until its time. In my education, I have read of the battles of great Church leaders who were eventually thrown out of their churches. In my denominational education, I was largely led to see them as heretics, rebels, eccentrics, revolutionaries, apostates, and as generally representing a lower form of spirituality. Church education often asked me to surrender my biases in favor of accepting a new set of assumptions--my denominational ones. We were to be critical of everything except our organization. I submit that there is danger in that. This book will cover incidents from the first forty years of my life as a religious addict. You may find something here that you can identify with.
