Over the past two hundred years, thousands of ancient Greek vases have been unearthed. Yet these artifacts remain a challenge: what did the images depicted on these vases actually mean to ancient Greek viewers? In this long-awaited book, Gloria Ferrari uses Athenian vases, literary evidence, and other works of art from the Archaic and Classical periods (520-400 B.C.) to investigate what these items can tell us about the ancient Greeks—specifically, their notions of gender. Ferrari begins by developing a theoretical perspective on visual representation, arguing that artistic images give us access to how their subjects were imagined rather than to the way they really were. For instance, Ferrari's examinations of the many representations of women working wool reveal that these images constitute powerful metaphors—metaphors, she argues, which both reflect and construct Greek conceptions of the ideal woman and her ideal behavior. From this perspective, Ferrari studies a number of icons representing blameless femininity and ideal masculinity to reevaluate the rites of passage by which girls are made ready for marriage and boys become men. Representations of the nude male body in Archaic statues known as kouroi, for example, symbolize manhood itself and shed new light on the much-discussed institution of paiderastia. This book exemplifies, analyses and describes different types of figurative meanings, or tropes, and rhythmical schemes in natural verbal language. It should be of interest to anyone who looks for linguistically oriented information about these questions. The book focuses on figurative language in standard English, but the analyses and explanations given should be valid also for other languages. Simile, personification, oxymoron, hyperbole, understatement, symbolic language and punning are dealt with, and there is a chapter on rhythmical schemes, but the main part of the book is about metaphor and metonymy, including synecdoche. A number of theoretical attempts at explaining the character of these tropes are described and discussed. A more comprehensive analytical perspective is argued for, however. Metaphorical and metonymic uses clearly connect to cognition and experience in general in a creative way, but in this study it is also pointed out that there are obvious parallels between metaphor and metonymy and the non-figurative types of relations in language systems termed hyponymy and meronymy. Accordingly, language users seem to operate with general types of semantic strategies.

There are numerous introductions to poetry and prosody available, but none at once so comprehensive and so accessible as this. With the increasing emphasis on free verse, the past generation has developed a widespread impression that the study of poetic meter is old fashioned—or even that form ‘doesn’t matter’ in poetry. It is an impression that has not been dispelled by the emphasis of some of the existing texts in the area on forms that are now rare or outmoded. The irony is that simultaneously in the past decade interest in formal matters among many poets and literary scholars has been on the increase; the reality is that prosody is today on the cutting edge of literary studies.
