Book Description
Architecture is the art and science of accommodating the lives we want to live. Our cities and buildings aren't givens; they are the way they are because that is as far as we have come to date. They are the best efforts of our ancestors and fellow planetizens, and if they have shortcomings, it is up to us to continue that effort, pick up where they left off. Bjarke Ingels Group's (BIG) grand mission is to find a pragmatic utopia, shaping not only a particular structural entity, but the kind of world we wish to inhabit. This book examines BIG's odyssey of architectural adaptation

S, M, L, XL

S, M, L, XL PDF Author: Rem Koolhaas
Publisher: The Monacelli Press, LLC
ISBN: 1885254865
Category : Architecture
Languages : en
Pages : 1383

Book Description
S,M,L,XL presents a selection of the remarkable visionary design work produced by the Dutch firm Office for Metropolitan Architecture (O.M.A.) and its acclaimed founder, Rem Koolhaas, in its first twenty years, along with a variety of insightful, often poetic writings. The inventive collaboration between Koolhaas and designer Bruce Mau is a graphic overture that weaves together architectural projects, photos and sketches, diary excerpts, personal travelogues, fairy tales, and fables, as well as critical essays on contemporary architecture and society. The book's title is also its framework: projects and essays are arranged according to scale. While Small and Medium address issues ranging from the domestic to the public, Large focuses on what Koolhaas calls "the architecture of Bigness." Extra-Large features projects at the urban scale, along with the important essay "What Ever Happened to Urbanism?" and other studies of the contemporary city. Running throughout the book is a "dictionary" of an adventurous new Koolhaasian language -- definitions, commentaries, and quotes from hundreds of literary, cultural, artistic, and architectural sources.

The Turning Point in Architectural Design

The Turning Point in Architectural Design PDF Author: Helmut C. Schulitz
Publisher:
ISBN: 9783777436760
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 240

Book Description
An argument for how the modernist credo "more with less" can guide sustainable architecture in the era of climate change. Over the past five hundred years, a rift has grown between the design and construction of buildings. The Turning Point in Architectural Design does not lament this rift, but rather sees it as an opportunity to explore new horizons in building design in the era of climate change. By taking a historical approach, this book shows how over time design has been less and less limited by the constraints of building materials and techniques and how novel architectural designs have pushed the boundaries of what is possible in construction. World-renowned architect Helmut Schulitz takes the modernist motto "more with less" to heart and applies its lessons to the future, where the demand for energy and resource conservation in all aspects of life--especially architecture--will be paramount.

Operative Design

Operative Design PDF Author: Anthony di Mari
Publisher: BIS Publishers
ISBN: 9789063692896
Category : Architecture
Languages : en
Pages : 144

Book Description
The core idea for this book is the use of operative verbs as tools for designing space. These operative verbs abstract the idea of spatial formation to its most basic terms, allowing for an objective approach to create the foundation for subjective spatial design. Examples of these verbs are expand, inflate, nest, wist, lift, embed, merge and many more. Together they form a visual dictionary decoding the syntax of spatial verbs. The verbs are illustrated with three-dimensional diagrams and pictures of designs which show the verbs 'in action'. This approach was devised, tested, and applied to architectural studio instruction by Anthony Di Mari and Nora Yoo while teaching at Harvard University's Career Discovery Program in Architecture in 2010. As instructors and as recent graduates, they saw a need for this kind of catalogue from both sides - as a reference manual applicable to design students in all stages of their studies, as well as a teaching tool for instructors to help students understand the strong spatial potential of abstract operations.

Notes from the Underworld

Notes from the Underworld PDF Author: Stefano Corbo
Publisher: Schiffer Publishing
ISBN: 9780764358401
Category : Architecture
Languages : en
Pages : 144

Book Description
Since early times, humans have explored the space below their feet for different purposes: to flee persecution and war, to find protection from severe climates, to improve urban life--and more recently, to solve environmental problems. A rare look at old and new subterranean structures from an architect's perspective, this seminal book examines the underworld through the lenses of wartime, life and death, religious and secular rituals, and adaptive reuse. The atlas of 80+ international projects range widely in time period and type, from a house in a defunct nuclear silo to an Arctic seed bank, a Beirut nightclub, art venues, an Italian winery, and a monastery carved into a mountain. All are surprising examples of how invisible manmade spaces follow the same cultural and economic cues as their visible counterparts and are places where we store, hide, repress, and live.
