Book Description
Since 2005, everyone who applies to become a British citizen has to show their knowledge of the English language and of life in the UK in one of two ways: by taking a special ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) course, or by taking the Life in the UK test. From April 2007, everyone who applies for permanent residence in the UK will also be required to take one of these two tests. This is the second edition of the official handbook which covers all the questions that may be asked in the test, and it is valid for all tests taken from April 2007. The handbook contains chapters on: the making of the United Kingdom, summarising its history; a changing society, including issues of migration and the changing role of women; a profile of Britain today, including its nations and regions, religion, customs and traditions; how Britain is governed, including the British Constitution and its role in Europe and the world; everyday needs, covering topics of housing, health, education, money, leisure and travel; employment issues; knowing the law, including the civil and criminal legal system; sources of help and information, including public libraries and the police service; and building better communities, including participating in the local community and opportunities for volunteering.

Life in the Kingdom, book 1
Author: Steve Husting
Publisher: Lulu.com
ISBN: 1387405942
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 254
Book Description
Have you ever asked yourself, ""Is this all there is to being saved? Isn't there something more to this?"" Most of us are only being taught half a salvation. Jesus' views on salvation are quite at odds with the way many of us experience it in our day-to day-lives. Life in the Kingdom is a devotional commentary on living the Christian life as Jesus anticipated it. Covering Matthew chapters 1-14 in this volume, we begin to see how the many elements of the Christian life are actually building materials for the Kingdom of God. We Christians seldom use the phrase, ""Kingdom of God,"" choosing rather to use ""saved."" But seeing our salvation in the context of the Kingdom clarifies why we do what we do, our position in God's plan of the ages, and imparts meaning to us who surrender to it.

Reforming the UK’s Citizenship Test
Author: Brooks, Thom
Publisher: Policy Press
ISBN: 1529218543
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 104
Book Description
How many questions could you answer in a pub quiz about British values? Designed to ensure new migrants have accepted British values and integrated, the UK's citizenship test is often portrayed as a bad pub quiz with answers few citizens know. With the launch of a new post-Brexit immigration system, this is a critical time to change the test. Thom Brooks draws on first-hand experience of taking the test, and interviews with key figures including past Home Secretaries, to expose the test as ineffective and a barrier to citizenship. This accessible guide offers recommendations for transforming the citizenship test into a ‘bridge to citizenship’ which fosters greater inclusion and integration.
