Book Description
'Breathlessly suspenseful, ingeniously plotted and impossible to put down' Yrsa Sigurdardottir The epic, explosive Fabian Risk series concludes with this action-packed thriller from international number one bestseller Stefan Ahnhem. He has extorted. He has abused. He has raped. He has sacrificed colleagues as a means to reach the top. His name is Kim Sleizner – and he works as a police chief in Copenhagen. Dunja Hougaard used to work for Sleizner. Then she left the police force, traumatised by what he put her through. Dunja is determined to get revenge on her former boss – no matter how untouchable he appears. Now she's gone underground to investigate his past, and bring his crimes to the attention of the world. When a high-ranking Danish intelligence officer and an unknown woman are found dead at the bottom of a lake outside Copenhagen, Dunja seizes her moment to set a trap for Sleizner. But then, just as it seems her case is solved, on the other side of the strait in Helsingborg, Sweden, detective Fabian Risk receives a message that changes everything... Praise for The Final Nail: 'This is a must for Scandinoir fans.' Publishers Weekly 'Stefan Ahnhem writes so damn well, it's as simple as that.' Katrine Engberg 'Holds his readers in a vice-like grip.' Jens Henrik Jensen '100% thrills guaranteed.' Michael Katz Krefeld Praise for Stefan Ahnhem: 'Atmospheric and complicated... with great cop characters and some imaginatively grisly perps.' Sunday Times 'Grips like a vice.' Irish Independent 'Epic in scale and ambition.' Daily Mail 'More gripping than Jo Nesbo.' Tony Parsons
Ecoliberation
Author: Jennifer D. Grubbs
Publisher: McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP
ISBN: 0228007372
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages :
Book Description
Disenchanted by indirect forms of protest designed to work within existing systems of corporate and state power, animal and earth liberation activists have turned instead to direct action. In this detailed ethnographic account Jennifer Grubbs takes the reader inside the complicated, intricate world of these powerful and controversial interventions, nuancing the harrowing realities of political repression with the inspiring, clever ways that activists resist. Grubbs draws on her personal experiences within the movement to offer a thoughtful and intersectional analysis. Tracing the strategies of liberationist activists as they grapple with doing activism under extreme repression, Ecoliberation challenges ubiquitous frameworks that position protestors as either good or bad by showing how activists playfully and confrontationally enact radical social change. Nearly a decade in the making, the book looks back at the notorious period of repression called the Green Scare and draws contemporary connections to the creep of fascism under President Donald Trump. In stories that are simultaneously heartbreaking, riddled with tension and contradiction, and inspiring, Grubbs proves that whether or not the revolution is televised, it will be spectacular.

A Nail the Evening Hangs On
Author: Monica Sok
Publisher: Copper Canyon Press
ISBN: 1619322161
Category : Poetry
Languages : en
Pages : 63
Book Description
In her debut collection, Monica Sok uses poetry to reshape a family’s memory about the Khmer Rouge regime—memory that is both real and imagined—according to a child of refugees. Driven by myth-making and fables, the poems examine the inheritance of the genocide and the profound struggles of searing grief and PTSD. Though the landscape of Cambodia is always present, it is the liminal space, the in-betweenness of diaspora, in which younger generations must reconcile their history and create new rituals. A Nail the Evening Hangs On seeks to reclaim the Cambodian narrative with tenderness and an imagination that moves towards wholeness and possibility.

The Name of God in Jewish Thought
Author: Michael T Miller
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1317372131
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 200
Book Description
One of the most powerful traditions of the Jewish fascination with language is that of the Name. Indeed, the Jewish mystical tradition would seem a two millennia long meditation on the nature of name in relation to object, and how name mediates between subject and object. Even within the tide of the 20th century’s linguistic turn, the aspect most notable in – the almost entirely secular - Jewish philosophers is that of the personal name, here given pivotal importance in the articulation of human relationships and dialogue. The Name of God in Jewish Thought examines the texts of Judaism pertaining to the Name of God, offering a philosophical analysis of these as a means of understanding the metaphysical role of the name generally, in terms of its relationship with identity. The book begins with the formation of rabbinic Judaism in Late Antiquity, travelling through the development of the motif into the Medieval Kabbalah, where the Name reaches its grandest and most systematic statement – and the one which has most helped to form the ideas of Jewish philosophers in the 20th and 21st Century. This investigation will highlight certain metaphysical ideas which have developed within Judaism from the Biblical sources, and which present a direct challenge to the paradigms of western philosophy. Thus a grander subtext is a criticism of the Greek metaphysics of being which the west has inherited, and which Jewish philosophers often subject to challenges of varying subtlety; it is these philosophers who often place a peculiar emphasis on the personal name, and this emphasis depends on the historical influence of the Jewish metaphysical tradition of the Name of God. Providing a comprehensive description of historical aspects of Jewish Name-Theology, this book also offers new ways of thinking about subjectivity and ontology through its original approach to the nature of the name, combining philosophy with text-critical analysis. As such, it is an essential resource for students and scholars of Jewish Studies, Philosophy and Religion.

Mythologizing Norval Morrisseau
Author: Carmen L. Robertson
Publisher: Univ. of Manitoba Press
ISBN: 0887554997
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 316
Book Description
Mythologizing Norval Morrisseau examines the complex identities assigned to Anishinaabe artist Norval Morrisseau. Was he an uneducated artist plagued by alcoholism and homelessness? Was Morrisseau a shaman artist who tapped a deep spiritual force? Or was he simply one of Canada’s most significant artists? Carmen L. Robertson charts both the colonial attitudes and the stereotypes directed at Morrisseau and other Indigenous artists in Canada’s national press. Robertson also examines Morrisseau’s own shaping of his image. An internationally known and award-winning artist from a remote area of northwestern Ontario, Morrisseau founded an art movement known as Woodland Art developed largely from Indigenous and personal creative elements. Still, until his retrospective exhibition at the National Gallery of Canada in 2006, many Canadians knew almost nothing about Morrisseau’s work. Using discourse analysis methods, Robertson looks at news stories, magazine articles, and film footage, ranging from Morrisseau’s first solo exhibition at Toronto’s Pollock Gallery in 1962 until his death in 2007 to examine the cultural assumptions that have framed Morrisseau.
