Reverse Symbolism Dictionary
Author:
Publisher: McFarland
ISBN: 9780786421251
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 0
Book Description
This is a companion to the hugely successful Symbolism: A Comprehensive Dictionary. The earlier dictionary was arranged by symbol and told what the meanings were. The present work goes the other way (but it is not simply a refiguring of the data). It presents ideas, situations or objects (ancient to modern), and gives the appropriate symbols (allusions, associations, attributes, or emblems). Some examples: one of the symbols for "hell" is descending stairs; an attribute of Saint Benedict is a raven; joy after sorrow is symbolized by the gemstone, amber. Literary, artistic, religious, heraldic, numerological, folkloric, occult, psychological, and biblical usages are included.

Works of Love
Author: Robert L. Perkins
Publisher: Mercer University Press
ISBN: 9780865546851
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 410
Book Description
"To claim that Works of Love is an important philosophical essay is to assume hazardous burden of proof. The book's title is an allusion to the Bible's injunction that we should love our neighbor as we love ourselves, a far cry, far instance, from Diotoma's ladder of erotic desire up which we climb from the love of bodies until we catch a vision of that "single sea of beauty," beauty itself (Plato, Symposium). This contrast, given that some of some of our neighbors may not be particularly likable or one may even be a determined enemy, suggests immediately to some that a book with such an obviously religious title must be excessively moralistic and, at best, full of sermon helps for the harried clergy or, at worst, laden with rules for the unlearned laity. A casual perusal of a few paragraphs, however, shows these "put-down" views of the book to be unfounded"--

Publisher: Unitarian Universalist Association of Congregations
ISBN: 9781558964303
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 132

Finding the Voice Inside invites women to name, honor and explore their female experience as it differs from male experience. Doing this work in a group and hearing themselves and others read aloud what's been written, women re-awaken to what they don't always know that they know. Doing these exercises alone can continue the tradition of diary, journal and letter writing that makes up our knowledge of women's lives throughout history. In their effort to balance the male-constructed view of the world, women must first recreate the images, symbols, metaphors and truths of their own lives, as women.
