Book Description
Excerpt from The Working and Management of an English Railway In the early part of last year I accepted an invitation from the Commandant of the Royal Engineers at Chatham to lecture at the School of Military Engineering at the Brompton Barracks upon the subject of "The Working of an English Railway." On that occasion, the theme was necessarily approached from the point of view of the utility of the railways in the event of the country being invaded; and although this led up to a description, within certain limits, of the methods of working and managing the railways, there were, of course, many branches of the subject which could not be brought within the scope of an evening's lecture, and would indeed scarcely have interested the audience to whom it was addressed. The lecture, however, in the printed form in which it afterwards appeared, attracted a certain amount of attention on the part of those interested in such matters, which eventually resulted in a suggestion that I should endeavour to deal with the subject in a more comprehensive manner than had previously been contemplated. The result of my attempt (I fear a very inadequate one) to carry out this suggestion is embodied in the following pages. The Railway Traveller's Handy Book PDF Author: Osprey Publishing
Publisher: Old House Books
ISBN: 9781908402349
Category : Railroad travel

Book Description
In the aftermath of the 'Railway Mania' of the 1840s Britain boasted an unrivalled network of train services. While many people were amazed and excited by the prospect of travelling by these technological marvels, as with all novelties there were many nervous or bewildered others. This 'handy book', published in 1862, provided suggestions for making the most of the journey. Offering advice about the best travelling costume, the dangers involved in sitting on top of the carriages, how to approach conversation with fellow passengers and, crucially, how to ensure that your wife follows the strict timetable, it gives a charming and entertaining insight into how the early railways were viewed by their Victorian passengers.

Book Description
Excerpt from English Railways: Their Development and Their Relation to the State The study was undertaken with the belief that a historical contribution to the railway question would have some practical value. It was carried out in a library that had been collected for the special purpose of railway research.1 It has been strictly limited to historical treatment, partly because the history was in itself a large subject, partly because it appeared that before modern railway problems could be studied the essential preliminary requirement was a statement of the historical facts unencumbered with judgments or Opinions on those problems. Night on the Galactic Railroad and Other Stories from Ihatov PDF Author: Kenji Miyazawa
Publisher: SCB Distributors
ISBN: 1935548999
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 200

Book Description
Kenji Miyazawa (1896-1933) is one of Japan's most beloved writers and poets, known particularly for his sensitive and symbolist children's fiction. This volume collects stories that focus on Miyazawa's love of space and his use of the galaxy as a metaphor for the concepts of purity, self-sacrifice, and faith, which were near and dear to his heart. "The Nighthawk Star" follows a lowly bird as he struggles to transform himself into something greater, a constellation in the night sky; "Signal & Signal-less" depicts a pair of star-crossed train signals who dream of eloping to the moon; and "Night on the Galactic Railroad," Miyazawa's most famous work, tells the story of two boys as they journey upon a train that traverses the Milky Way, learning the true meaning of friendship, happiness, and life itself along the way.
