Book Description
A woman said my dad was in a car wreck. He died. He drove head first into a building.' Sue Ann rambled without a breath. 'Kathy, my dad has been dead for eight years. I think she was talking of your dad. There was a purple car. Where are you?' 'You're not making any sense, ' I said. She persisted. 'Kathy, when is the last time you saw your dad?' 'Last week. Why?' 'Jorge says his car has been missing for five days, Kathy.' 'Itchy Feet' was the term Kathy's mother used to describe the behavior of Kathy's father, Robert. It is a deep drive to go, tour, sojourn, to be a rover, a nomad, or to wander. It is a drive that makes you feel you must go; that you will die if you do not. Robert's 'itchy feet' made him unpredictable and easily misunderstood. Kathy reserves judgment and shares stories of the man as she knew him-from her childhood to his mysterious end. A series of heartfelt anecdotes about one man's life and choices reveals the spirit beneath the eccentricity.

Escape Artist

Escape Artist PDF Author: Joseph McAleer
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0192514075
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 288

Book Description
The life of Sir Harry Perry Robinson (1859-1930) unfolds like a Boy's Own adventure. Born in India and educated at Oxford, Harry fled to the United States to make his name and fortune. After a stint in the gold mines of the American West, he became a major force in the railroad industry and helped to elect a U.S. President. Returning to England, Harry had a celebrated career as a book publisher (discovering the American author Jack London) and as a journalist for The Times, serving as the oldest correspondent during the First World War and going on to have one of the scoops of the century: the discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamun in 1923. Harry's incredible journey unfolds against the background of his equally adventurous and accomplished family. His father, Julian, was an Indian Army chaplain and newspaper editor. His aunt was a suffragette and personal friend of both Disraeli and Gladstone. Brother Philip was a dashing foreign correspondent, arrested as a spy during the Spanish-American War. Brother Edward ('Kay'), founder of the British Empire Naturalists' Association, gave Rudyard Kipling his first writing job. And troubled sister Valence was rumoured to end her days living in a barrel on a roadside in Bulawayo. From the White House to Buckingham Palace, the American West to the Western Front, the sands of Egypt to the shores of India, the board room to the bedroom, Harry was a master of reinvention, and each of the nine 'lives' he assumed allowed an 'escape' from one experience into the next. His innate wanderlust was both a blessing and a curse, but it made for a splendid adventure, and Harry's was a grand life lived in history's shadow.

Many five year olds first step through the door of their kindergarten classroom clutching a favorite toy or squeezing a wedge of their blanket. But not Michael. He strode through the open door carrying a book in his arms for he’d taught himself to read by the age of four. And never did he stop. When he turned ten, I bought Mike a complete set of the World Book Encyclopedia. The day they arrived I found him sitting at the kitchen table with Volume One. It was his intent to read through all 22 volumes until I convinced him that was neither necessary nor their purpose. This was the time before the internet, before when needing to know was but finger tips away. Reading was a key to discovery and learning, and learning was Mike’s life long passion, particularly learning about history.

A Walk in My Shoes

A Walk in My Shoes PDF Author: D. Rod Lloyd
Publisher: D. Rod Lloyd
ISBN:
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 272

Book Description
Autobiography by D. Rod Lloyd, transitioning from an English background to a US adulthood.

Learn what small things growing up formed the basis of the man.

They say “to truly know and understand a man, you need to walk a mile in his shoes”. Here is an opportunity to walk in my shoes and get to know me a little.

There have been many autobiographies written by famous people or those who have made some notable contribution, making their story sought after. I write this not as a famous or prominent person, but as an average lad, for those who are interested, to see what my average life has consisted of and to truly see where I am coming from.

I wish my grandparents had written such a book for me to know them better.

In school, I was the worst writer and speller. Now I am writing as a published author. This book has helped me understand my past and, put all the pieces into perspective, understand how each experience has affected and influenced my life. Getting started was the hardest part. Once I started writing, I became addicted and consumed, I couldn’t stop. It was almost like I needed to see where I came from and where it was taking me.

They say when you have a near-death experience, your life flashes before you. Writing your own life story is a much more civilized way to get what I assume is the same experience. It is a fascinating journey revisiting one’s own life. Our memories are stored in the mind as little pockets of isolated information. Writing this book has allowed me to consolidate the memories into a logical and chronological order.
