Local Environmental Movements

Local Environmental Movements PDF Author: Pradyumna P. Karan
Publisher: University Press of Kentucky
ISBN: 0813138779
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 320

Book Description
Increasing evidence of the irreparable damage humans have inflicted on the planet has caused many to adopt a defeatist attitude toward the future of the global environment. Local Environmental Movements: A Comparative Study of the United States and Japan analyzes how local groups in both Japan and the United States refuse to surrender the Earth to a depleted and polluted fate. Drawing on numerous case studies, scholars from around the world discuss efforts by grassroots organizations and movements to protect the environment and to preserve the landscapes they love and depend upon. The authors examine citizen campaigns protesting nuclear radiation and chemical weapons disposal. Other groups have organized to protect farmlands and urban landscapes to groups that organize to preserve steams, wildlife habitats, tidal flats, coral reefs, National Parks, and biodiversity. These small groups of determined citizens are occasionally successful, demonstrating the power of democracy against seemingly insurmountable odds. In other cases, the groups failed to bring about the desired change. This book explores the distinctive leaders, the relevant laws and regulations, local politics, and the historical and cultural contexts that influenced the goals and successes of the various groups. The contributors conclude that there is no one single environmental movement but many, and the volume emphasizes grassroots movements and advocacy groups that represent local constituencies. By studying these groups and their respective challenges, Local Environmental Movements highlights the common themes as well as the distinctive features of environmental advocates in the United States and Japan. Over decades, these groups' have nurtured environmental awareness and promoted the concept of sustainable development that respects the need for both environmental protection and cultural preservation.

Managing Engineering Processes in Large Infrastructure Projects

Managing Engineering Processes in Large Infrastructure Projects PDF Author: Pascal Bohulu Mabelo
Publisher: Cambridge Scholars Publishing
ISBN: 1527575985
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 275

Book Description
Project managers are often scolded and crucified for the massive overruns plaguing their megaprojects. While some project managers may deserve the blame, a closer look would reveal that many competent ones are bearing the brunt of the failure, not of Project Management as such, but of Engineering Management. Project management experts would eventually concede that once the engineering team loses control over the ‘technical content’, you can no longer control the time or money spent on it. Engineering mistakes and other “design discrepancies” always breed overruns in projects, and poor performance in subsequent operations, because those design errors will cause difficulties during construction and engender recurring malfunctions in operations. No cost and schedule management tools or weekly status reports can prevent or remedy those situations. Therefore, proceeding from the Systems Thinking approach, this book discusses the causes of, and explores methods that address, such insidious predicaments. It examines topics ranging from stakeholders’ needs and requirements to how they ought to be translated into functions so that they may be performed by the systems under development. Design and development processes and methods, as well as their generic outputs and respective lifecycle implications, are also discussed based on practical, real-life examples.

The Ethics of Japan's Global Environmental Policy

The Ethics of Japan's Global Environmental Policy PDF Author: Midori Kagawa-Fox
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1136481729
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 334

Book Description
This book examines the Japanese government policies that impact on the environment in order to determine whether they incorporate a sufficient ethical substance. Through the three case studies on whaling, nuclear energy, and forestry, the author explores how Western philosophers combined their theories to develop a ‘Western environmental ethics code’ and reveals the existence of a unique ‘Japanese environmental ethics code’ built on Japan’s cultural traditions, religious practices, and empirical experiences. Kagawa-Fox’s discussions show that in spite of the positive contributions that Japan has made towards the global environment, the government has failed to show a corresponding moral obligation to the world ecology in its environmental policy. The book argues that this is a result of the integrity of the policies having been compromised by vested interests and that Japanese business and politics ensure that the policies are primarily focused on maintaining sustainable economic growth. Whilst Japan's global environmental initiatives are the key to its economic survival in the 21st century, and these initiatives may achieve their aims, they do however fail the Japanese code of environmental ethics. This book is essential reading for anyone interested in Environmental Studies, Environmental Policy and Ethics, Japanese Politics and Japanese Culture and Society.
