Book Description
The author’s second volume about the Great Western’s classic express locomotives covers their final six years in British Railways service. In 1960 the Castles, many now modernized with double chimneys and 4-row superheaters, were still in charge of most of the Western Region’s expresses, but by the summer of 1963 their regular express work was limited to the London – Worcester route. Their declining numbers in the last couple of years covered special summer and relief trains, parcels and freight work, deputizing for failed or unavailable diesels and a flurry of excursions and railtours where their prowess could still be demonstrated. The author worked and lived alongside them in these years and the book includes much of his own personal experience on the footplate, on their trains and on shed. The book recaps briefly their first 25 years and covers their history, operation and performance in their final years and is copiously illustrated including over 100 color photographs.

Devon and Cornwall the Class 47 Years

Devon and Cornwall the Class 47 Years PDF Author: Bernard Mills
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781781556573
Category : Class 47 (Diesel locomotives)
Languages : en
Pages : 144

Book Description
The year 2002 saw a radical change on the railways of Devon and Cornwall: it was the last year of daily locomotive hauled passenger trains (other than the overnight London sleeper). These remaining workings were in the capable hands of the ubiquitous Class 47 diesel locomotives, which had plied their trade on the rails of the southwest for almost four decades. Devon and Cornwall--The Class 47 Years is a book of two halves: the first documenting the locomotives' daily work on all manner of trains and lines in the area from 1966 onwards and the second providing a detailed examination of 2002--their last year in front-line passenger service in the West Country--with a glimpse of some of the other automotive power seen in that year. All of this is now history, a snapshot back in time. Over 180 colou photographs, all captured by the author, take the reader on a chronological trip with much nostalgia and a host of unrepeatable scenes that showcase many of the stunning locations to be found in the two counties.

Rail Operations Viewed From South Devon

Rail Operations Viewed From South Devon PDF Author: Garth Pedler
Publisher: Troubador Publishing Ltd
ISBN: 1784622583
Category : Transportation
Languages : en
Pages : 464

Book Description
South Devon, a thriving county with the sea, estuary and moorland for recreation, owes much of its success and vibrant economy to the railways that provide day return services, allowing people to travel freely to and from London and the North. Rail Operations Viewed From South Devon is a comprehensive exploration of the railways in and around South Devon, with chapters drawing on areas across the country such as Totnes, Carlisle and Bristol. Embracing a wide range of topics to help the reader understand how railway engineering reached its current state, this book aims to encourage discussion about the rail network as an entity. Chapters include the history of the sea and cliff issues associated with Dawlish, as well as how the Victorians built a congestion-free rail system around Bristol, with another chapter detailing the Cross Country timetables of 1925. This extensive insight into the railway also draws on the author’s personal experience of undertaking a rail tour to Carlisle and back to Totnes in 1999, following the re-privatisation of the rail network, in comparison to a previous excursion in 1961. Illustrated throughout with dozens of detailed maps and diagrams, as well as useful statistics, Rail Operations Viewed From South Devon will appeal to readers who are curious about railway history and the recent management of the rail networks.
