The Other End of the Leash

The Other End of the Leash PDF Author: Patricia McConnell, Ph.D.
Publisher: Ballantine Books
ISBN: 0307489183
Category : Pets
Languages : en
Pages : 289

Book Description
Learn to communicate with your dog—using their language “Good reading for dog lovers and an immensely useful manual for dog owners.”—The Washington Post An Applied Animal Behaviorist and dog trainer with more than twenty years’ experience, Dr. Patricia McConnell reveals a revolutionary new perspective on our relationship with dogs—sharing insights on how “man’s best friend” might interpret our behavior, as well as essential advice on how to interact with our four-legged friends in ways that bring out the best in them. After all, humans and dogs are two entirely different species, each shaped by its individual evolutionary heritage. Quite simply, humans are primates and dogs are canids (as are wolves, coyotes, and foxes). Since we each speak a different native tongue, a lot gets lost in the translation. This marvelous guide demonstrates how even the slightest changes in our voices and in the ways we stand can help dogs understand what we want. Inside you will discover: • How you can get your dog to come when called by acting less like a primate and more like a dog • Why the advice to “get dominance” over your dog can cause problems • Why “rough and tumble primate play” can lead to trouble—and how to play with your dog in ways that are fun and keep him out of mischief • How dogs and humans share personality types—and why most dogs want to live with benevolent leaders rather than “alpha wanna-bes!” Fascinating, insightful, and compelling, The Other End of the Leash is a book that strives to help you connect with your dog in a completely new way—so as to enrich that most rewarding of relationships.

The Psycho Diet

The Psycho Diet PDF Author: Shane Cuthbert
Publisher: Shane Cuthbert
ISBN:
Category : Health & Fitness
Languages : en
Pages : 53

Book Description
For those of you unfamiliar with the analogy of the frog in the saucepan, let me fill you in. If you take a frog and place it into a saucepan of boiling water it will jump straight out. However, if you put the same frog in a lukewarm saucepan increasing the temperature slowly, its neurology does not notice the change and the frog remains in the pot until it boils to death. Basically, the analogy demonstrates that gradual changes happening over time make it difficult for us to notice. This can be positive and negative depending on whether that change has developed habits within our best interests or not. This explains why when we examine our weight over time we don’t notice it being a problem, however when presented with a photo of us at a younger age we notice the significant change straight away. This is something that occurs commonly, people tend to let their dietary habits slip over many years. For those of us that have fallen into the trap of indulging in (high calorie) foods, the problem is not with the foods chosen but more so the timing. To be more specific, people tend to eat these particular foods whilst having a break from stressors in the workplace. In other words, we fall into the trap of ‘comfort eating’. This mental trap occurs alto often in smokers. A smoker will describe intense cravings for a cigarette when they have gone without a cigarette for too long (especially if something stressful was happening at the time). For those of you that have travelled this journey before, you know full well how unhealthy that cigarette craving is for you. But that powerful urge to ‘scratch the itch’ is sometimes just too overwhelming to resist. I bring this up because the way in which it feels when you try resisting the urge to indulge in comfort eating during stressful times is incredibly similar. When that urge becomes strong enough, all the knowledge goes right out of the window. In this book we discover the psychological hurdles preventing us from achieving our goals, or sticking to them long term. The unconscious mind is always developing new meanings to things happening in our every day lives and that includes attaching meaningings to the food we eat, our excise habits and our diets. Learn how to master the unconscious mind overcome negative and unhealthy eating, diet and exercise habits and replace them with new ones. Struggling to stick to your diets and workout routines? does the daily workout feel like a struggle? are you overwhelmed and lacking motivation? this book is for you, for the first time ever, Shane explains the psychological reasons holding you back, we have been listening to weightless gurus for years, trying the new 'fad' diets and taking our personal trainers advice but never before has anyone focused on the mindset and exactly what is happening on the inside that explains our struggles.

Dadland

Dadland PDF Author: Keggie Carew
Publisher: Open Road + Grove/Atlantic
ISBN: 0802190383
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 420

Book Description
As her father’s memory fails, a daughter explores his military past: “Part family memoir, part history book . . . Compelling and moving from start to finish” (Financial Times). One of the San Francisco Chronicle’s Ten Best Books of the Year For most of Keggie Carew’s life, she was kept at arm’s length from her father’s personal history. But when she is invited to join him for the sixtieth anniversary of the Jedburghs—an elite special operations unit that was the first collaboration between the American and British Secret Services during World War II—a new door opens in their relationship. As dementia begins to stake a claim over Tom Carew’s memory, Keggie embarks on a quest to unravel his story, and soon finds herself in a far more consuming place than she bargained for. Tom Carew was a maverick, a left-handed stutterer, a law unto himself. As a Jedburgh he parachuted behind enemy lines to raise guerrilla resistance first against the Germans in France, then against the Japanese in Southeast Asia, where he won the nickname “Lawrence of Burma.” But his wartime exploits were only the beginning. A winner of the Costa Book Award, Dadland takes us on a journey through peace and war and shady corners of twentieth-century politics; though the author’s English childhood and the breakdown of her family, and into the mysterious realm of memory. “Brings to mind Helen MacDonald’s H is for Hawk in the way it soars off in surprising directions, teaches you things you didn’t know, and ambushes your emotions.” ―NPR “Astonishing . . . Mixes intimate memoir, biography, history and detective story: this is a shape-shifting hybrid that meditates on the nature of time and identity . . . Tom Carew was a razzle-dazzle character, larger than life and anarchically self-invented . . . For all its vigor and comic zest, Dadland is a careful and tender discovery that patiently circles around a man who spent his life mythologizing and running away from himself.” ―The Observer
