Book Description
There currently exists an abundance of materials selection advice for designers suited to solving technical product requirements. In contrast, a stark gap can be found in current literature that articulates the very real personal, social, cultural and economic connections between materials and the design of the material world. In Materials Experience: Fundamentals of Materials and Design, thirty-four of the leading academicians and experts, alongside 8 professional designers, have come together for the first time to offer their expertise and insights on a number of topics common to materials and product design. The result is a very readable and varied panorama on the world of materials and product design as it currently stands. - Contributions by many of the most prominent materials experts and designers in the field today, with a foreword by Mike Ashby - The book is organized into 4 main themes: sustainability, user interaction, technology and selection - Between chapters, you will find the results of interviews conducted with internationally known designers - These 'designer perspectives' will provide a 'time out' from the academic articles, with emphasis placed on fascinating insights, product examples and visuals

Materials Experience

Materials Experience PDF Author: Jonathon Allen
Publisher: Elsevier Inc. Chapters
ISBN: 0128055855
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 23

Book Description
Beyond physical and performance characteristics, there are several other, often tacit, criteria that guide or influence designers’ selection of materials. These criteria, or choices, reveal more about the designer – his or her tastes, values and preferences. These are not merely abstract matters, however, but rather the very essence of a designer’s knowledge and experience that shapes and influences our world when applied in designed artifacts. Through a series of illustrated examples, this chapter explores some of the immaterial dimensions of material selection – not immaterial in the English sense of being unimportant, but rather immaterial because it deals with the intangible and deeper philosophical, social, cultural, environmental and political dimensions of material selection.

Predicting Perceptions: Proceedings of the 3rd International Conference on Appearance

Predicting Perceptions: Proceedings of the 3rd International Conference on Appearance PDF Author: Stefano Padilla
Publisher: Lulu.com
ISBN: 147166869X
Category : Reference
Languages : en
Pages : 218

Book Description
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and appearance lies in the mind of the observer. The latter is playing an increasingly important role in nearly all of our buying decisions: it informs us as to the quality of an automobile cabin, the desirability of an iPhone, the handle of a woollen sweater - the list is endless.Given the exponential rise in internet commerce and the ubiquity of smart devices, the ability to predict buyers' perceptions formed from interaction with digital media is maybe more important than those obtained by handling the real article. Thus, the science of appearance metrology is becoming increasingly critical. It concerns the development of methodologies, procedures, and equipment which allow us to predict observers' perceptions. The field is therefore highly multidisciplinary: physical measurement, psychophysics, media generation, image processing, statistics, and vision science. This book is a compilation of recent research relating to perception and appearance.

Collected Papers III

Collected Papers III PDF Author: I. Schutz
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 940153456X
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 239

Book Description
Alfred Schutz devoted his life to a clarification of the foun dations of the social sciences. His first formulation of the perti nent problems is contained in DER SINNHAFTE AUFBAu DER SOZIALEN WELT, EINE EINLEITUNG IN DIE VERSTEHENDE SOZIOLOGIE, now available in a second unrevised German edition with an English translation in preparation. Since I932, the date of this work, Alfred Schutz pursued painstaking and detailed investigations of issues which arose in connection with his early endeavors. These investigations were originally published as a series of essays and monographs over a period of about twenty years and are now assembled in the COLLECTED PAPERS of which this is the third and final volume. They form a unitary whole insofar as a common core of problems and theoretical ideas is presented from varying perspectives. Together DER SINNHAFTE AUFBAu DER SOZIALEN WELT and the three volumes of COL LECTED PAPERS set forth a comprehensive and consistent theory of the world of everyday life as the reality with which the social sciences are essentially concerned. Alfred Schutz was preparing a systematic presentation of his theory and of the results of his investigations into the struc tures of the world of everyday life when death overtook him. The manuscript containing the final statement of his philosophical and sociological thinking was not completely ready for publi cation at the time of his death. It is now being brought into book form by Professor Thomas Luckmann, one of his former students.
