His ideas, experiences and influences come together into an important work which will challenge inquisitive players and thoughtful coaches to rethink some familiar concepts. While the G-spot is all pervasive in many of the discussions, Tony also throws in advice and innovative methods on such things as how to maximise the chances of 'lucky' back corner nicks and the elimination of 'free shots. An interesting journey, challenging analysis and entertaining anecdotes make it a timely addition to squash instructional writing.'Ian MckenzieEditorThe Squash Player magazine" This a great book for all levels . Not illustrated. 1900 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER XII. GENERAL HINTS. In this Chapter there will be a considerable amount of repetition, since I shall begin by summing up a few of the most important suggestions in the previous Chapters. 1. During the game keep on the alert before and after every stroke; be on your toes, ready to move into either position and thence to any spot. 2. Keep your racket in the Hand-mirror position before and after every stroke. 3. These are two golden rules, and a third is to keep your eye so that it just takes in your opponent, and enables you to judge of the direction of his stroke, until he has made the stroke; then keep your eye fixed on the ball before every stroke, up to the last possible moment. 4. A fourth rule is to get into position (Forehand or Backhand) the moment you have judged to which side the ball will come. Start early and, if necessary, move to the ball in this position (either in a few strides or with many short steps), so as to be already in position before the ball comes. 5. These movements should be made automatic and instinctive, as far as they can be made so. So should the downward sweep of the racket and the swing of the body on its hips; and so should the upward return of the racket after following through the stroke, and the return to the alert position on the toes. We said just now that the player must start early: the words must be applied in another sense. He or she must start to learn before the body and its muscles and bones are " set ." Children should be drilled in certain movements, with singing or humming, and then they will already have elements ready-made: later on, when they come to play the game, or any new game such as Lawn-Tennis or Golf, they will just have to re-combine these readymade elements and to add a...
