Book Description
It is a short, convenient to read compilation of the text extracts of the two of the Russian greatest classical writers of the second half of the 19th century: Anton Pavlovich Chekhov and Ivan Alexandrovich Goncharov. In this (the 1st) volume there is Chekhov's short story "Stout and Thin" with the author's (Zoia Sproesser's) translation into English, and also, an extract - the very beginning - of Goncharov's masterpiece, the novel "Oblomov", with the translation made in the 1950-ties in England by a professional literary translator. The book is a dual language book. When a reader opens the two pages, they will see on the left page side Russian original text, and on the right page side its English translation. The author, a bilingual educator, who lives and works in California, USA, a native Russian speaker, when formatting the book, was trying to match the Russian to their English matching paragraphs, as best as she could. Also, the pages of Russian and English are kept strictly in match so the translation text would never overrun to the next page where a new paragraph/page starts. The book is an excellent tool for those who studies RUSSIAN, and for ENGLISH readers who are interested in having a closer look at the Russian original of the two uniquely talented and profound classical writers. The book is supplied by author's comments and some Russian language/culture explanations.

It is also much less painful.Three Years (Russian: Три года, translit. Tri goda) is an 1895 novella by Anton Chekhov originally published in the January and February 1895 issues of Russkaya Mysl. At 130 pages it is Chekhov's second-longest narrative. The story takes a negative position on the progress of society, featuring individuals of the merchant and factory owner class and their workers, without offering political solutions.Anton Pavlovich Chekhov (29 January 1860 - 15 July 1904) was a Russian playwright and short-story writer, who is considered to be among the greatest writers of short fiction in history. His career as a playwright produced four classics, and his best short stories are held in high esteem by writers and critics. When you want to read in both Russian and English, though, there's a great option: bilingual books!Reading bilingual books and inferring the vocabulary and grammar is a far superior method of language learning than traditional memorization. It is also much less painful. The Duel (Russian: Поединок; Poedinok) is a novel by Russian author Aleksandr Kuprin published in 1905. It is generally considered his best work; even though Kuprin's 1896 short story Moloch first made his name known as a writer it was The Duel (1905) which made him famous. Because of it "Kuprin was highly praised by fellow writers including Anton Chekhov, Maxim Gorky, Leonid Andreyev, Nobel Prize-winning Ivan Bunin" and Leo Tolstoy who acclaimed him a true successor to Chekhov. It concerns an intelligent young officer, Second Lieutenant Romashov, stationed at a dull military garrison in southern Russia where he can not stomach his sadistic and stupid colleagues and military life. He falls in love with the wife of a superior officer, a cold and calculating woman whose one ambition is her husband's advancement. The affair leads in the end to the duel of the title, both externally, and figuratively through the young man's naive dreams of grandeur confronting the degeneration of military life and society of the time.Anton Pavlovich Chekhov (29 January 1860 - 15 July 1904) was a Russian playwright and short-story writer, who is considered to be among the greatest writers of short fiction in history. Pages : 158

Book Description
The Dual-Language Russian-English Book is based on an outstanding story by Anton Pavlovich Chekhov "Gooseberries". Chekhov is a well-known master of a short-story. The book is supplemented by the grammar section on Russian Noun: Declension by Cases. The Cases of Russian Noun present problems for those who try to master Russian language. This book is a pleasant combination of Chekhov's talent with the practical language study skill. The reader will kill two birds with one stone, or, as we say in Russian culture "will catch two rabbits": by enjoying the brilliant literary piece and having the opportunity to challenge his or her mind by glancing into the six Cases of the three genders of a Russian Noun. The book is an excellent reading source and a study tool for all interested in world classics, as well as for professors or students of Russian language. Zoia Sproesser has lived in California for 16 years. She has s a Master Degree in Education from one of California Universities. She teaches ESL (English for immigrants) and Russian at a local community college. She studies Spanish for 9 years and has recently published her first tri-lingual book (also based on one of Chekhov's stories).
