Book Description
The twelve-hundred kilometre narrow gauge railway from Port Augusta to Alice Springs served the Outback of Australia for 100 years. Starting in 1878 as the Port Augusta and Government Gums Railway, it became the Great Northern Railway and then the Central Australian Railway. The once or twice a week passenger train became known as the 'Ghan'.Partially by-passed in the 1950s, the old narrow gauge line was closed in 1980 and the rails pulled up. Two sections have survived - the first 40 kms through Pichi Richi Pass which operates as a Heritage Railway and the final 23 kms into Alice Springs, which currently no longer operates.Although the rails have gone, there is still much to see along the route. The author has compiled this Guide to the old railway - what is there and what was there and how to find locations, mostly through his own travels and with his photographs taken over more than fifty years.

Shame and the Captives

Shame and the Captives PDF Author: Thomas Keneally
Publisher: Simon and Schuster
ISBN: 1476734666
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 384

Book Description
“If the legendary Schindler’s List was not enough to showcase Thomas Keneally’s literary mastery, then [this novel] surely will” (New York Daily News) as the Booker Prize-winning author reimagines from all sides the drastic true events of the night more than one thousand Japanese POWs staged the largest and bloodiest prison escape of World War II. Alice is living on her father-in-law’s farm on the edge of an Australian country town, while her husband is held prisoner in Europe. When Giancarlo, an Italian inmate at the prisoner-of-war camp down the road, is assigned to work on the farm, she hopes that being kind to him will somehow influence her husband’s treatment. What she doesn’t anticipate is how dramatically Giancarlo will change the way she understands both herself and the wider world. What most challenges Alice and her fellow townspeople is the utter foreignness of the thousand-plus Japanese inmates and their deeply held code of honor, which the camp commanders fatally misread. Mortified by being taken alive in battle and preferring a violent death to the shame of living, the Japanese prisoners plan an outbreak with shattering and far-reaching consequences for all the citizens around them. In a career spanning half a century, Thomas Keneally has proven brilliant at exploring ordinary lives caught up in extraordinary events. With this profoundly gripping and thought-provoking novel, inspired by a notorious incident in New South Wales in 1944, he once again shows why he is celebrated as a writer who “looks into the heart of the human condition with a piercing intelligence that few can match” (Sunday Telegraph).

Australia's Railways

Australia's Railways PDF Author: Ed Wright
Publisher: Exisle Publishing
ISBN: 1921497092
Category : Travel
Languages : en
Pages : 88

Book Description
When Australia was first settled by Europeans in 1788, the worldwide railway boom was still 40 years away. When the railways finally came to Australia, they helped create new towns and alleviate the isolation of the outback. Communities began to consolidate in places where the rail came. In the cities the railway enabled the growth of commuter belt suburbs. They have been crucial to the development of Australian industry. Railways and associated industries were the biggest employers in Australia. The railways reached their pinnacle in the 1950s, but they have been disadvantaged by Australia’s sparsely distributed population and low density cities, the advancement of the motor vehicle, and air travel. Nonetheless, the future for our railways is not completely grim. While the romance of the long-distance passenger journey seems to have more tourist than utilitarian value, the growing population in Australia’s major cities, as well as the traffic and environmental problems caused by cars, means that urban railways are more vital than ever to the effective operation of cities. The railways also continue to play an important part in freighting the produce of Australia’s primary industries as well as in agriculture. Combined with the large number of heritage and tourist trains, these ensure that even today some of the romance of the railways remains.

Design, History and Time

Design, History and Time PDF Author: Zoë Hendon
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing
ISBN: 1350060666
Category : Design
Languages : en
Pages : 217

Book Description
Design, History and Time reflects on the nature of time in relation to design, in both past and contemporary contexts. In contrast to a traditional design historical approach which emphasises schools and movements, this volume addresses time as a continuum and considers the importance of temporality for design practice and history. Contributors address how designers, design historians and design thinkers might respond to the global challenges of time, the rhythms of work, and the increasing speed of life and communication between different communities. They consider how the past informs the present and the future in terms of design; the importance of time-based design practices such as rapid prototyping and slow design, time in relation to memory and forgetting, and artefacts such as the archive for which time is key, and ponder the design of time itself. Showcasing the work of fifteen design scholars from a range of international contexts, the book provides an essential text for thinking about changing attitudes to the temporal.
