Coastline Changes of the Baltic Sea from South to East

Coastline Changes of the Baltic Sea from South to East PDF Author: Jan Harff
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3319498940
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 386

Book Description
This book discusses sea-level and coastline changes. These topics are becoming increasingly important for populations living along the edge of the world’s oceans and seas, especially in areas where eustatic sea-level rise is superimposed on isostatic subsidence and storm-induced coastal erosion. This is the case at the southern and eastern Baltic Sea coast: in the south, glacio-isostatic subsidence enhances the effect of climate-induced sea-level rise and strong storm effects are causing a continuous retreat of the coast. On the eastern coast glacio-isostatic uplift compensates for eustatic sea-level rise, but storm-induced waves are responsible for permanent morphodynamic changes to the coastline. There is an increasing need for protection concepts for defense but also for the economic use of the different types of coastal zones. The elaboration of these management concepts can be facilitated through models that generate future projections of coastal developments in the light of modern climate change. This anthology comprises the results of the research project “Coastline Changes of the southern Baltic Sea – Past and future projection (CoPaF)” funded by the Polish Ministry of Science and Higher Education, which was run by a team of Estonian, German, Lithuanian, and Polish geoscientists and coastal engineers from 2010 to 2013 and overlapped with and complemented the work of COST Action SPLASHCOS supported by COST (European Cooperation in Science and Technology). As the southern and eastern Baltic serves as a natural laboratory for the investigation of coastal processes, the project’s findings contribute not only to the solution of regional problems in Baltic coastal research and engineering, but also to worldwide interests in description, modelling and parameterization of coastal processes and morphodynamics.

And Now The Shipping Forecast

And Now The Shipping Forecast PDF Author: Peter Jefferson
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing
ISBN: 1906860610
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 256

Book Description
Peter Jefferson presented The Shipping Forecast for over 40 years, and his familiar voice continued to be heard reading quotations on BBC Radio 4's Quote... Unquote. This book is both an affectionate memoir and a history of the science and BBC programming behind the forecast. Peter explains how it came out, who collects all the information and what it's like to read this bulletin. Even though the information in the forecast is now readily available in many formats, The Shipping Forecast is something of a 'must listen' for fans gathered over the decades. For reasons not quite understood, it has become a much-loved part of the British cultural landscape with an avid following of listeners who find its poetry is the perfect cure for insomnia. This book is perfect for those fans.

Quaternary Glaciations - Extent and Chronology

Quaternary Glaciations - Extent and Chronology PDF Author: J. Ehlers
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 0444535373
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 1127

Book Description
The book presents an up-to-date, detailed overview of the Quaternary glaciations all over the world, not only with regard to stratigraphy but also with regard to major glacial landforms and the extent of the respective ice sheets. The locations of key sites are included. The information is presented in digital, uniformly prepared maps which can be used in a Geographical Information System (GIS) such as ArcView or ArcGIS. The accompanying text supplies the information on how the data were obtained (geomorphology, geological mapping, air photograph evaluation, satellite imagery), how the features were dated (14C, TL, relative stratigraphy) and how reliable they are supposed to be. All references to the underlying basic publications are included. Where controversial interpretations are possible e.g. in Siberia or Tibet, this is pointed out. As a result, the information on Quaternary glaciations worldwide will be much improved and supplied in a uniform digital format. The information on the glacial limits is compiled in digital form by the coordinators of the project, and is available for download at: http://booksite.elsevier.com/9780444534477/ - Completely updated detailed coverage of worldwide Quaternary glaciations - Information in digital, uniformly prepared maps which can be used in a GIS such as ArcView or ArcGis - Step-by-step guideline how to open and use ArcGis files - Possibility to convert the shapefiles into GoogleEarth kmz-files - Availability of chronological controls

Coastline Changes

Coastline Changes PDF Author: Jan Harff
Publisher: Geological Society of America
ISBN: 0813724260
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 222

Book Description
"This volume contributes to the current discussion of the role of natural and anthropogenic driving forces for coastal processes and their socioeconomic consequences. Special attention is paid to computerized tools that allow us--based on reconstruction of paleodevelopments--to predict the interference of processes on different time scales. On the one hand, the book provides an overview of the current model developments in describing vertical crustal movement, climate change forcing sea-level variations, the genesis of the basin fill along continental margins, and the interference of these processes in coastal development. On the other hand, it describes coastal development in key areas for different climate zones and geological settings. Coastline Changes is addressed to students and professionals in the geosciences, archaeology, social sciences, economy, and computer sciences. It will foster interdisciplinary discussion for the purpose of developing integrated concepts for sustainable development of the coastal zones."--Publisher's website.
