Book Description
Svitzer Marine operates 41 tugs in the UK and provides services in seven ports and six terminals; Adsteam provides harbour and terminal towage services in six of the UK's major deep-water ports and adjacent waterways. This report on the proposed acquisition of Adsteam by Svitzer concludes that the only significant lessening of competition would occur at Liverpool, where Svitzer should be required to divest either the Adsteam or Svitzer operation to a suitable purchaser. As well as the report and findings, this publication contains: financial information on the two companies; industry background; information on entry conditions into local markets; an analysis of Svitzer and Adsteam prices and discounts; sales and market share in Liverpool.

The Coastguard, Emergency Towing Vessels and the Maritime Incident Response Group

The Coastguard, Emergency Towing Vessels and the Maritime Incident Response Group PDF Author: Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Transport Committee
Publisher: The Stationery Office

Category : Business & Economics

Pages : 228

Book Description
Under current proposals the Maritime & Coastguard Agency plans to close ten of the existing 14 Maritime Rescue Coordination Centres and to leave three that remain open on a 24-hour basis and five that will operate in "daylight" hours only. The Transport Committee found little support for the measures and has no confidence that, under these proposals, the Coastguard will in future be able to respond to emergencies at sea as well as they do now, let alone in a more effective way. The Committee is not convinced by the Government's claim that technology can, at present, replace local knowledge. Serious concerns were raised that the safety of people at sea, on cliffs and beaches will be jeopardised if the proposals proceed in their current form. Ministers must issue revised proposals for further consultation. The Committee also strongly condemns the Government's cost-cutting decision to withdraw funding for the four Emergency Towing Vessels (ETVs) stationed around the UK coast - large tugs that intercept disabled ships to prevent environmental pollution disasters. The Transport Committee also criticises proposals to completely remove government funding for the Maritime Incident Response group (MIRG), a national fire-fighting-at-sea capability. Ministers should instead adopt a slimmed-down MIRG which is more cost-effective than the present arrangement. Lastly, the Committee records its disappointment that Mike Penning MP, Minister for Shipping, instructed regular coastguards not to give oral evidence to the committee on the basis that they were junior civil servants.

Black Tide

Black Tide PDF Author: John Julian

Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 195

Book Description
When the 236-metre long container ship Rena ploughed into and was impaled upon the Astrolabe Reef off Tauranga at 2.20am on 5 October 2011, it began one of the biggest salvage operations and environmental disasters in New Zealand history. The Rena was carrying 1368 containers, 1700 tonnes of heavy fuel oil and 200 tonnes of marine diesel, all of which threatened to enter the sea. Salvors worked round the clock to stem the black tide and thousands of New Zealanders volunteered to clean up beaches and rescue wildlife. In Black Tide John Julian investigates the real story behind the Rena catastrophe and attempts to answer the many questions surrounding the disaster. What really happened on that fateful night and why did the Rena run aground? Who is responsible? What could be done better and faster? And, importantly, is New Zealand able to effectively respond to maritime disasters? The Rena?s circumstances are complicated ? built in Germany, registered in Liberia, insured in Sweden and reinsured in England, owned by a Greek company, chartered to a Swiss group and crewed by Filipinos ? and the story of the shipwreck is no less fraught. Black Tide looks for information amid the flotsam and jetsam and addresses the most important question of all: what can be done to stop this happening again?
