Book Description
The three spatial characteristics of length, height and depth are used in the same unreflective way by laymen, technicians and scientists alike to describe the forms, positions and measure of bodies and hollow bodies. But how do we know that the space we live in has just these three dimensions? The question has occupied philosophers and scientists since antiquity. The answers proposed have become ever more presumptuous and have increasingly lost sight of everyday intuitions and have sacrificed explanatory power. In Euclid's Heritage Janich shows that all explanations of three-dimensionality hinge on an unreflective geometrical language which seems to accept the lack of an alternative for the three sorts of entities -- points, lines and planes -- that bound the three extended entities -- lines, planes and solids. This is a Euclidean heritage in a dual sense: Euclid himself adopted a geometrical language from the art of figure drawing, and left a tradition of doing geometry as planimetry and of doing stereometry by rotating plane figures. The systematic approach offered here starts out from operational definitions of the spatial forms -- plane, straight edge and perpendicularity -- and proofs that only three planes can intersect pairwise orthogonally. This is the constructive solution in the frame theory of action, providing an unequivocal characterisation of spatial relations in the physical world. The traditional order of geometric concepts turns out to be the most important obstacle to the methodical ordering of everyday scientific concepts.

The Making of Eurasia

The Making of Eurasia PDF Author: Moritz Pieper
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing
ISBN: 1838601341
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 184

Book Description
The Making of Eurasia investigates the multi-layered spectrum of China and Russia's Eurasian policies towards each other, ranging from competition to cooperation, as well as the role of regional actors in between. The book examines the impact of and responses to the dynamic Sino-Russian interaction in the wake of China's Belt and Road initiative, focusing on the selected case studies of Kazakhstan, Mongolia and Uzbekistan, but also on inter-regional implications across the Eurasian space. With China's imprint on inter-regional politics and ambition to make a distinctive Chinese contribution to 'globalization' and Russia's vision of a 'Greater Eurasia' in which Moscow stakes out a place for itself as an indispensable power, other regional actors adopt policies that respond to and co-shape the resulting centrifugal forces. Meanwhile, power shifts are underway on a global plane, as the normative divide between Russia and the West has widened, and as the Sino-American rivalry is intensifying. The book therefore also sheds light on the effects of Eurasian power shifts on global governance in a context where global 'leadership' is contested, and in which the US and Europe are re-defining their relationship not only towards a self-confident China but also towards each other. As such, this study will provide valuable insight for students and scholars of Eurasian Asia Studies, Foreign Policy Analysis, and International Relations at large.

Short-Term Couples Therapy

Short-Term Couples Therapy PDF Author: Wade Luquet
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1135925410
Category : Family & Relationships
Languages : en
Pages : 279

Book Description
For more than a decade, Short-Term Couples Therapy: The Imago Model in Action has been used regularly by therapists interested in this effective and now well-known model of working with couples. Building on the precepts of the Imago Relationship Therapy Model, as introduced in the pioneering work of Dr. Harville Hendrix, the book has made available to the professional therapist the technique and rationale of this evolutionary approach to working with couples in a brief therapy context. Now thoroughly revised and updated, Short-Term Couples Therapy offers a user-friendly, six-session format, laid out clearly and cogently, whose potential for application is immediately apparent. The essence of the Imago Model is distilled into a practical, workable methodology. The text presents a unique reality-based approach to facilitate effective couple interaction, updates the processes and theory that have proven so effective in the short-term approach to couples therapy, and incorporates the major advances in the practice of Imago Relationship Therapy.
