Book Description
Altered art is the fastest growing craft trend today--but its practitioners can’t live by books alone: they long to expand their horizons and explore new directions. And this follow-up to the hugely successful Altered Art will fulfill their creative desires. It moves into uncharted territory, focusing not on books, but on transforming the surfaces of a multitude of everyday objects into artistic canvases. The 25 projects clearly prove that the possibilities are limited only by one’s own imagination. For example, in the hands of five different crafters, those ubiquitous mint tins become a small shrine, necklace, photo book, and doll. Profusely illustrated profiles showcase ten contemporary artists doing their work; all provide invaluable insights into the creative process.

The Body-Image Meaning-Transfer Model: An investigation of the sociocultural impact on individuals‘ body-image

The Body-Image Meaning-Transfer Model: An investigation of the sociocultural impact on individuals‘ body-image PDF Author: Anke Jobsky
Publisher: Anchor Academic Publishing (aap_verlag)
ISBN: 3954896206
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 109

Book Description
This book deals with the impact of the sociocultural environment on body-image in Western consumer culture. Based on McCracken’s (1986) meaning-transfer model, the author has created a body-image meaning-transfer (BIMT) model. It suggests how cultural discourse and interactions can shape individual consumers’ understanding of socially ‘good’ and ‘bad’ bodies. It emphasizes the notable impact of mainstream advertising, media, and celebrity culture that commonly promote a thin-and-muscular beauty-ideal, and the process of normalization which implies feelings of guilt, anxiety, public observation, and failure. Both can ultimately lead to negative body-images and body-dissatisfaction among individuals. In contrast, alternative campaigns against the current beauty-ideal and towards healthier body-images are introduced. Two focus group discussions among young adults from the UK and Germany provide insight into the timeliness of the topic concerned.

Book Description
Welcome to the post proceedings of the First International Conference on Embedded Software and Systems (ICESS 2004), which was held in Hangzhou, P. R. China, 9–10 December 2004. Embedded Software and Systems technology is of increasing importance for a wide range of industrial areas, such as aerospace, automotive, telecommunication, and manufacturing automation. Embedded technology is playing an increasingly dominant role in modern society. This is a natural outcome of amazingly fast developments in the embedded field. The ICESS 2004 conference brought together researchers and developers from academia, industry, and government to advance the science, engineering, and technology in embedded software and systems development, and provided them with a forum to present and exchange their ideas, results, work in progress, and experience in all areas of embedded systems research and development. The ICESS 2004 conference attracted much more interest than expected. The total number of paper submissions to the main conference and its three workshops, namely, Pervasive Computing, Automobile Electronics and Tele-communication, was almost 400, from nearly 20 countries and regions. All submissions were reviewed by at least three Program or Technical Committee members or external reviewers. It was extremely difficult to make the final decision on paper acceptance because there were so many excellent, foreseeing, and interesting submissions with brilliant ideas.
