RAF Fighters vs Luftwaffe Bombers

RAF Fighters vs Luftwaffe Bombers PDF Author: Andy Saunders
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing
ISBN: 1472808541
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 81

Book Description
The Battle of Britain was a fight for survival against a seemingly unstoppable foe. With the German army poised to invade, only the fighters of the Royal Air Force stood between Hitler and the conquest of Britain. Losses were high on both sides, but the Spitfires, Hurricanes, Havocs and Defiants of the RAF began to take their toll on the overextended, under-protected Kampfgruppen of Heinkel He 111s, Junkers Ju 87s and 88s, and Dornier Do 17s. Both sides learned and adapted as the campaign went on. As the advantage began to shift from the Luftwaffe to the RAF, the Germans were forced to switch from round-the-clock bombing to only launching night-raids, often hitting civilian targets in the dreaded Blitz. This beautifully illustrated study dissects the tactics and technology of the duels in this new kind of war, bringing the reader into the cockpits of the RAF fighters and Luftwaffe bombers to show precisely where the Battle of Britain was won and lost.

Luftwaffe Hit-and-Run Raiders

Luftwaffe Hit-and-Run Raiders PDF Author: Chris Goss
Publisher: Classic Publications
ISBN: 9781903223994
Category : Bombing, Aerial
Languages : en

Book Description
In 1940 the Luftwaffe fitted bombs to their Messerschmitt 109s and Messershcmitt 110s, thus creating the Jagdbomber or Jabo. Jabos played a key role in the Battle of Britain, but then appeared to be forgotten until early 1942 when two fighter Staffeln were formed on the Western Front and carried out deadly lightning low-level hit-and-run attacks in southern Britain. Despite the relative successes of these two units, they were combined and redesignated Schenellkampfgeschwader 10 or SKG 10in the spring of 1943. The Luftwaffe later decided to commit these warplanes to risky night operations, but the first such mission on 16 April 1943 sadly ended in tragedy. In 1944 they were redesigned and eventually named Nachtschlachtgruppe 20, and despite shortages of aircraft and pilots, they continued to fly on crucial missions such as against the Remagen Bridge and Allied motor transport columns until the end of the war. With many rare and previously unpublished photographs of both the crews and aircraft, this impressive book tells the story of the famous nocturnal Jabo attacks carried out by I/SKG 10 and its subsequent designations. Fully illustrated throughout, it draws upon genuine Allied combat reports, Luftwaffe mission reports, and the expert post-war analysis carried out by its highly decorated commander, Major Kurt Dahlmann. This masterful study belongs in the library of every serious military historian and modeler.

To Defeat the Few

To Defeat the Few PDF Author: Douglas C. Dildy
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing
ISBN: 1472839153
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 387

Book Description
Over the past 80 years, histories of the Battle of Britain have consistently portrayed the feats of 'The Few' (as they were immortalized in Churchill's famous speech) as being responsible for the RAF's victory in the epic battle. However, this is only part of the story. The results of an air campaign cannot be measured in terms of territory captured, cities occupied or armies defeated, routed or annihilated. Successful air campaigns are those that achieve their intended aims or stated objectives. Victory in the Battle of Britain was determined by whether the Luftwaffe achieved its objectives. The Luftwaffe, of course, did not, and this detailed and rigorous study explains why. Analysing the battle in its entirety in the context of what it was – history's first independent offensive counter-air campaign against the world's first integrated air defence system – Douglas C. Dildy and Paul F. Crickmore set out to re-examine this remarkable conflict. Presenting the events of the Battle of Britain in the context of the Luftwaffe's campaign and RAF Fighter Command's battles against it, this title is a new and innovative history of the battle that kept alive the Allies' chances of defeating Nazi Germany.

Book Description
As the Battle of Britain was coming to a close, the Luftwaffe found merit in arming its single-engined fighters with bombs, using them in preference to twin-engined bombers against many daylight targets. In 1941, these attacks tailed off but in the Spring of 1942, recommenced, initially against shipping and coastal targets. Two units were designated for these jagdbomber (literally fighter-bomber) attacks-10/JG 2 and 10/JG 26 and the targets were extended to include railways, gas holders and selected military and civilian installations. The detrimental affect on British morale caused by what was known as 'Tip and Run' attacks was great. The Luftwaffe's Fighter-Bombers analyses the campaign from September 1942 - June 1943 highlighting, among others, unopposed attacks on London, Yeovil, Salisbury, the Isle of Wight, Great Yarmouth, Torquay and Bournemouth. Both the raid on Dieppe and the sinking of HMS Berkeley by 10/JG 2 are examined using contemporary records and first hand accounts from both the German and British sides. Tactics are considered from both attacker and defender viewpoints, their successes and failures and corresponding impact. Using previously unpublished photographs, the majority of which are German (some even showing the air attacks as seen from the cockpits of German aircraft), the book tackles a previously unpublished aspect of the World War II air war.

Night Fighters

Night Fighters PDF Author: Colin D. Heaton

Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 232

Book Description
"Night Fighters examines the historical, technological. tactical, and strategic evolution of limited-visibility aerial combat as the air forces of Great Britain and Germany dueled in the night skies during World War II. The book is based on extensive research and interviews with the key planners and policy makers responsible for their respective national strategies governing the conduct of the nighttime air war, as well as with the airmen who fought the war, which makes it far more detailed than previous works on this subject. The science developed by both nations greatly increased the momentum and lethality of air combat in that conflict. In addition, this arena of World War II combat also produced many technological innovations, the results of which are seen today in everyday military and civilian life."--BOOK JACKET.
