The Position

The Position PDF Author: Meg Wolitzer
Publisher: Simon and Schuster
ISBN: 1439103658
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 320

Book Description
From the bestselling author of The Wife—Meg Wolitzer’s “hilariously moving, sharply written novel” (USA TODAY), hailed by critics and loved by readers worldwide, with its “dead-on observations about sex, marriage, and the family ties that strangle and bind” (Cleveland Plain Dealer). Crackling with intelligence and humor, The Position is the masterful story of one extraordinary family at the hilarious height of the sexual revolution—and through the thirty-year hangover that followed. In 1975, Paul and Roz Mellow write a bestselling Joy of Sex-type book that mortifies their four school-aged children and ultimately changes the shape of the family forever. Thirty years later, as the now dispersed family members argue over whether to reissue the book, we follow the complicated lives of each of the grown children and their conflicts in love, work, marriage, parenting, and, of course, sex—all shadowed by the indelible specter of their highly sexualized parents. Insightful, panoramic, and compulsively readable, The Position is an American original.

Power of Position

Power of Position PDF Author: Robert D. Montoya
Publisher: MIT Press
ISBN: 0262045273
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 267

Book Description
How biodiversity classification, with its ranking of species, has social and political implications as well as implications for the field of information studies. The idea that species live in nature as pure and clear-cut named individuals is a fiction, as scientists well know. According to Robert D. Montoya, classifications are powerful mechanisms and we must better attend to the machinations of power inherent in them, as well as to how the effects of this power proliferate beyond the boundaries of their original intent. We must acknowledge the many ways our classifications are implicated in environmental, ecological, and social justice work—and information specialists must play a role in updating our notions of what it means to classify. In Power of Position, Montoya shows how classifications are systems that relate one entity with other entities, requiring those who construct a system to value an entity’s relative importance—by way of its position—within a system of other entities. These practices, says Montoya, are important ways of constituting and exerting power. Classification also has very real-world consequences. An animal classified as protected and endangered, for example, is protected by law. Montoya also discusses the Catalogue of Life, a new kind of composite classification that reconciles many local (“traditional”) taxonomies, forming a unified taxonomic backbone structure for organizing biological data. Finally, he shows how the theories of information studies are applicable to realms far beyond those of biological classification.

The Position of the Adopted Child of God

The Position of the Adopted Child of God PDF Author: Chibuzo N. A. Uruakpa
Publisher: Covenant Books, Inc.
ISBN:
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 307

Book Description
The declaration by Paul the Apostle that "if any one be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things have passed away; behold, all things are become new" encapsulates the restorative transformation of the believer. Yet many don't have a clear understanding of the status this transformation confers on the believer in Christ. In The Position of the Adopted Child of God, Dr. Uruakpa presents in a readable and compelling language the transcendent newness of the adopted child of God, detailing the necessity of the adoption; the cost, method, and consequences of the adoption; and the benefits of the newness accruing to the believer in the form of their secure inheritance. The author sounds a note of warning to twenty-first-century believers to beware of all the forces that threaten to sabotage this privileged position as God's adopted child. This position, in spite of all odds, the author underscores, is unassailable in the life of the child of God, who is seated with Christ--astounding!

The Island Position

The Island Position PDF Author: John Lehr
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781912339327
Category : Photography, Artistic
Languages : en
Pages :

Book Description
"The 'island position' is an advertising term that describes the premium position of an advertisement surrounded solely by editorial content. In 'The Island Position', John Lehr explores the facades of American commercial spaces that are threatened by the emergence of e-commerce. In a rush to remain relevant, storeowners emblazon their windows and walls with anything that will grab attention: tessellations of quick-fading ads, floor-to-ceiling decals of fanned money or flowing hair, haphazard product displays, and desperate, hand-scrawled invitations. They repaint, renovate, rebrand, and rearrange, gestures which point to the desires and anxieties of people who are being left behind as our thumbs lead us into the new economy. The work presents a turning point in our cultural landscape: the transition from a physical culture to a virtual one. Masquerading as a typology of storefronts, the surfaces in 'The Island Position' embody something unseen: the people who constructed them. The signage is not simply an appeal to consumption, but a typography of emotion: vulnerability, ingenuity, distress, and hope--the language of capitalism as a form of public address. Lehr is not interested in what is for sale. He is interested in what is at stake" -- Publisher's website
