Giles's War

Giles's War PDF Author: Tim Benson
Publisher: Random House
ISBN: 1473543924
Category : Humor
Languages : en
Pages : 533

Book Description
Few contemporaries captured Britain’s indomitable wartime spirit as well or as wittily as the cartoonist Carl Giles. Now, for the first time, the very best of the cartoons he produced between 1939 and 1945 are brought together, including many that have not seen the light of day in over 75 years. As a young cartoonist at Reynold’s News and then the Daily Express, Giles's work provided a crucial morale boost – and much-needed laughs – to a population suffering daily privations and danger, and Giles's War shows why. Here are his often hilarious takes on the great events of the war – from the Fall of France, via D-Day, to the final Allied victory – but also his wryly amusing depictions of ordinary people in extraordinary times, living in bombed-out streets, dealing with food shortages, coping with blackouts, railing against bureaucracy and everyday annoyances. It's a brilliantly funny chronicle of our nation’s finest hour, as well as a fitting tribute to one of our greatest cartoonists.

Dr. Seuss Goes to War

Dr. Seuss Goes to War PDF Author: Richard H. Minear
Publisher: New Press/ORIM
ISBN: 1595589902
Category : Humor
Languages : en
Pages : 493

Book Description
“A fascinating collection” of wartime cartoons from the beloved children’s author and illustrator (The New York Times Book Review). For decades, readers throughout the world have enjoyed the marvelous stories and illustrations of Theodor Seuss Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss. But few know the work Geisel did as a political cartoonist during World War II, for the New York daily newspaper PM. In these extraordinarily trenchant cartoons, Geisel presents “a provocative history of wartime politics” (Entertainment Weekly). Dr. Seuss Goes to War features handsome, large-format reproductions of more than two hundred of Geisel’s cartoons, alongside “insightful” commentary by the historian Richard H. Minear that places them in the context of the national climate they reflect (Booklist). Pulitzer Prize–winner Art Spiegelman’s introduction places Seuss firmly in the pantheon of the leading political cartoonists of our time. “A shocker—this cat is not in the hat!” —Studs Terkel

UK Feminist Cartoons and Comics

UK Feminist Cartoons and Comics PDF Author: Nicola Streeten
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 3030363007
Category : Comics & Graphic Novels
Languages : en
Pages : 286

Book Description
This book demonstrates that since the 1970s, British feminist cartoons and comics have played an important part in the Women’s Movement in Britain. A key component of this has been humour. This aspect of feminist history in Britain has not previously been documented. The book questions why and how British feminists have used humour in comics form to present serious political messages. It also interrogates what the implications have been for the development of feminist cartoons and for the popularisation of feminism in Britain. The work responds to recent North American feminist comics scholarship that concentrates on North American autobiographical comics of trauma by women. This book highlights the relevance of humour and provides a comparative British perspective. The time frame is 1970 to 2019, chosen as representative of a significant historical period for the development of feminist cartoon and comics activity and of feminist theory and practice. Research methods include archival data collection, complemented by interviews with selected cartoonists. Visual and textual analysis of specific examples draws on literature from humour theory, comics studies and feminist theory. Examples are also considered as responses to the economic, social and political contexts in which they were produced.

This is the End

This is the End PDF Author: Patrick Chappatte
Publisher: Interlink Books
ISBN: 9781623719562
Category : Humor
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
“To many Americans, every day was anguish, and the only salve for our pain was Chappatte’s cartoons. They could help us come to terms with what was happening, even, perhaps, help us better understand our anguish. How else do you deal with something as grotesque, ridiculous, and unbelievable, but nonetheless real and consequential?” —From the foreword by Joseph E. Stiglitz, Nobel Prize Laureate PATRICK CHAPPATTE’S EIGHT—AND LAST!—COLLECTION OF EDITORIAL CARTOONS PUBLISHED IN THE NEW YORK TIMES This is the End offers us a witty, savage, and thought-provoking testimony of a dizzying world, swirling around an oxygen-sucking black hole named Donald Trump. In this era of strongmen, closing borders and selfie narcissists, humor is needed more than ever. On June 10, 2019, Chappatte posted an essay titled “The End of Political Cartoons at The New York Times,” breaking the news that was quickly confirmed by the newspaper. Chappatte’s piece, which received worldwide attention and triggered a global discussion about self-censorship by the media in the age of internet angry mobs, appears as an appendix to this cartoon book. It has inspired a TED talk given by Chappatte on July 23, 2019 at TED Summit.
