Book Description
Last Rose of Summer is everyone's story. A story that embraces anyone who ever lived in a neighborhood, or feared a bully or ever wanted to love. It is a story about the extraordinary richness of ordinary-seeming people. On a journey to adulthood Carlos Jackson starts learning the art of living after he suddenly becomes smitten by Kamara, a young girl who visits her aunt next door. At a picnic, she places a single rose petal into Carlos’ hand and from this day on, roses follow Carlos through life until the last rose comes. Yet his enthrallment leads him into conflict with Blue Joe Davis, the neighborhood bully. And when he is left heartbroken by Kamara’s unexpected departure, Uncle Dan, an enigmatic old man from across the hall, comes to Carlos’ rescue. Unbeknownst to the neighborhood, Uncle Dan is the grandson of a Yoruba warrior and a master of Capoeira. Becoming the old man’s apprentice Carlos learns Capo-Kung, a martial arts hybrid reflecting art, beauty, harmony, patience, and integrity. Years later, Carlos and Kamara are reunited but Blue Joe also re-emerges bringing a new level of conflict. Set largely in the historic 1960’s, the story moves with Carlos through the urban streets of Cleveland and the lives of its colorful neighborhood folks, to war-torn rice fields of Vietnam and even further to far flung regions of Timbuktu. Sometimes you’ll be Carlos, sometimes, Kamara, and even Blue Joe perhaps. The story will surprise you. Its host of characters will delight you. It will sneak into your mind and heart. It will make you laugh and weep. Soulfully told with spectacular clarity, Last Rose of Summer flows like music you love. American writer Muhyiddin Shakoor, in his fresh and electrically exciting novel, is inviting us to row our boats gently down the stream and see that life truly is a dream.

On the Corposphere

On the Corposphere PDF Author: José Enrique Finol
Publisher: Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG
ISBN: 3110696932
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 265

Book Description
The book presents and analyzes some of the most important issues related to the body seen as a rich and complex anthropological and semiotic object, capable of playing a decisive role in the meaning making processes of cultural and social life. The analysis presented in this book opens a whole set of new venues for the study of body performances and representations, and shows how the embodiment of social and cultural life shape our world. In all of its relationships and in itself, our body works in a sort of corposphere, which is, in turn, part of the semiosphere, defined by Lotman as a continuum occupied by different types of semiotic formations. It is from/in/by the body that all semiosis begins and ends; it is in its presence and absence, in its being and in its presentation amidst the lived situational life where we might discover and shape the senses of the world. Many different academic fields will find in this book deep insights about how the body is at the center of cultural and social processes.

Handbook of Research on Contemporary Approaches to Orientalism in Media and Beyond

Handbook of Research on Contemporary Approaches to Orientalism in Media and Beyond PDF Author: Tombul, I??l
Publisher: IGI Global
ISBN: 1799871827
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 990

Book Description
Orientalism is about much more than just information gathered about the East within its general postcolonial period. In this period, orientalism is a Western discourse that dominated and shaped the view of the East. There is “otherization” in the way the West has historically looked at the East and within the information presented about it. These original stories of travelers in the past and previous telling about the East are facing a reconstruction through modern types of media. Cinema, television, news, newspaper, magazine, internet, social media, photography, literature, and more are transforming the way the East is presented and viewed. Under the headings of post-orientalism, neo-orientalism, or self-orientalism, these new orientalist forms of work in combination with both new and traditional media are redefining orientalism in the media and beyond. The Handbook of Research on Contemporary Approaches to Orientalism in Media and Beyond shows how both new media and traditional media deal with orientalism today through the presentation of gender, race, religion, and culture that make up orientalist theory. The chapters focus on how orientalism is presented in the media, cinema, TV, photography, and more. This book is ideal for communications theorists, media analysts, practitioners, researchers, academicians, and students working in fields that include mass media, communications, film studies, ethnic studies, history, sociology, and cultural studies.

Space-Time (Dis)continuities in the Linguistic Landscape

Space-Time (Dis)continuities in the Linguistic Landscape PDF Author: Isabelle Buchstaller
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 1040012213
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 372

Book Description
This collection spotlights the diachronic dimensions of the linguistic landscape, the importance of exploring temporal dissonances in historical events in order to better understand semiotic, political, and social transformations across different communities over the last century. The volume seeks to expand the current borders of linguistic landscape (LL) research by situating the analysis of signs in the LL within their time–space organization, which has been understudied in existing scholarship. The book, featuring chapters from established and emerging scholars, argues that a focus on the historicity of the city text can reveal unique insights into the role of semiotic processes as precursors and support mechanisms for political and social changes. The collection is structured around different temporal clusters and geographic contexts across the globe where shorter and longer waves of politically driven resemioticization can be most sharply observed – post-colonial communities; post-communist societies; and recent and current sociopolitical upheavals. Taken together, the volume proposes a kaleidoscope view of the complex temporalities that underpin multimodal discourses in contested public spaces, offering new directions for LL research. This book will be of interest to students and scholars in sociolinguistics, discourse analysis, semiotics, visual anthropology, and political science. Antígona by José Watanabe

Antígona by José Watanabe PDF Author: Cristina Pérez Díaz
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 1000786358
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 152

Book Description
This book brings to English readers, in its entirety for the first time, a translation of José Watanabe’s Antígona, accompanied by the original Spanish text and critical essays. The lack of availability in English has resulted in the absence of Antígona from important Anglophone studies devoted specifically to the reception of ancient Greek tragedy in the Americas. Pérez Díaz's translation fills this gap. The introduction provides the performative, political, and historical contexts in which the text was written in collaboration with the actress Teresa Ralli, from the Peruvian theater group Yuyachkani, who also originally performed it. Following the bilingual text, a critical essay provides an analysis of textual aspects of Antígona that have been disregarded, situating it in relation to Sophocles' Antigone and in conversation with relevant moments of the vast traditions of reception of the Greek tragedy. An appendix briefly surveys some notable productions of the play throughout Latin America. This comprehensive volume provides an invaluable resource for readers interested in José Watanabe's work, students and scholars working on classical reception and Latin American literature and theatre, as well as theatre practitioners.

Book Description
'Glimpses of my Master' is an account of the life and work of the enlightened Indian mystic, Osho, written from the point of view of a close disciple. Veena Schlegel was one of the first western people to meet Osho, formerly Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh, in Bombay, India, in1971. Working for him and his community in a number of ways - as a meditation centre leader, as an editor of his books, as one of his PR people in Rajneeshpuram in the USA and as one of a team of seamstresses responsible for his clothes and household effects - presented Veena with an opportunity to not only work on herself, but to observe him working with the hundreds of thousands of people coming from all over the world to listen to his words, do his meditations and live in his communes in India, the USA and around the world. Her book is about her very personal, often humorous, insights into this inspirational and extraordinary man and his attempts to help people become more aware and conscious and thus lead happier, more contented lives based on an understanding of their own personal truths. 'Glimpses of my Master' is the second of a trilogy of books in which Veena writes both about her journeys around the world and her journeys inwards on the spiritual path.

Since it has been an inclusive practice within the temple and was not revealed to others, the principles and authentic methods remain unknown to many. This book, as the first introductory book of Shaolin Chanwuyi, was written based upon the teaching of Master Shi Dejian who is the eighteenth successor of Shaolin Chanwuyi. This book describes the history and philosophy of Shaolin Chanwuyi and explains the methods for practicing. The goal of Chanwuyi is to obtain enlightenment and wisdom, develop virtuous character, and maintain good health. This is the ultimate Chan; it cannot be expressed in words. Shaolin Chan, Wu, and Yi are united and complementary. Shaolin Wushu first focuses on training the mind, which is the essence for perfecting Shaolin Wushu. It is only when one has become proficient in Shaolin Wushu that can one understand the mind and body, then can improve the mental and physical problems. By healing oneself and others, one in turn can nurture a heart of Chan. Chan, Wu, and Yi go together; the three components are united into one thing.

A Vanished Road

A Vanished Road PDF Author: Veena Schlegel

Pages : 138

Book Description
A Vanished Road is a travel story. It is an account of a journey overland through Middle Eastern countries to India in 1971. The world then was a very different place to the one it is today. The countries I and five travelling companions travelled through - by train, boat, bus, local indescribable vehicles and sometimes on foot - were untouched and unspoilt by tourism and other international influences. Television was still a novelty in western countries; here it was unknown. For most of the local people, the hippies travelling through, breaking that later quite well-trodden trail, were the first westerners they had ever seen. There were no maps or guidebooks. The only guide was the hippie grapevine and the pointing of a local's finger. Toby and Marianne Wheeler, founders of the famous Lonely Planet guidebooks, traversed this road a year later - a journey which provided the inspiration for the beginning of their venture. English was rare, other languages unknown, so communication took place on a different level - via the heart, via intuition. It was always a guessing game! Our experiences were varied and unique. Sometimes we were met by innocent interest and open-hearted generosity, sometimes by infuriatingly deliberate stonewalling, sometimes by suspicion and hostility. We needed to keep our wits about us and be very patient. It was usually a smile and a calm centeredness that got us through. The journey was physically and emotionally tough and demanding but the reward was a deeply touching and life-changing experience which cannot now be repeated. With the events of the last few decades - tragic in the case of Afghanistan - this road, with its unique flavour, has vanished forever.

Sicher in Kreuzberg

Sicher in Kreuzberg PDF Author: Ayhan Kaya
Publisher: Transcript Verlag, Roswitha Gost, Sigrid Nokel u. Dr. Karin Werner
ISBN:
Category : Family & Relationships
Languages : en
Pages : 246

Book Description
This book examines the construction and articulation of diasporic cultural identity among the Turkish working-class youth in Kreuzberg (Little Istanbul), Berlin. This work primarily suggests that the contemporary diasporic consciousness is built on two antithetical axes: particularism and universalism. The presence of this dichotomy derives from the unresolved historical dialogues that the diasporic youths experience between continuity and disruption, essence and positionality, tradition and translation, homogeneity and difference, past and future, 'here' and 'there', 'roots' and 'routes', and local and global.
