Book Description
A Romeo and Juliet story set against the strict Muslim laws of Saudi Arabia, Sulaiman Addonia’s astonishing debut novel is a sensuous and intensely wrought story of a young immigrant and a girl behind a veil who defy law and risk their lives to be together. Under a relentless summer sun, women dressed like long dark shadows and men decked out in light cotton robes roam the streets of Jeddah. While most of Naser’s friends have left town to escape the heat, he must stay behind to work. An African immigrant and outsider, Naser spends his spare time frequenting a friend’s café, writing letters to his mother in Eritrea, and daydreaming about the glamorous girlfriend he hopes to one day have. Naser and his younger brother were sent to Saudi Arabia to avoid the war back home, but though they live with their conservative Muslim uncle they remain under the watchful, wrathful eyes of the religious police, who monitor the community’s every action, govern the near indestructible boundaries between men and women–walls in mosques, panels on buses, separate visiting quarters in houses, and, of course, the black veil, or abaya, that adorns the women–and punish any disobedience by public beating or death. But a splash of color arrives in Naser’s world when unexpectedly a small piece of paper is dropped at his feet. It is a love note from a girl whose face he has never seen and whose voice he has never heard. To identify her among the sea of veiled women, she instructs him to look for a pair of pink shoes peeking out from under her draped abaya. Intrigued and encouraged, Naser rebels against Wahhabist Islamic convention and begins a clandestine correspondence with the girl. Yet even as the barriers that divide them begin to crumble under the weight of their passionate prose and devotion, the lovers’ illicit affair will face the ultimate and most heartrending test.

Book Description
It began with an interview that should have been mundane, and it ended with me becoming a foster mom and my boss demanding I uncover evidence to put a man behind bars—for life. I believed I was one of the good ones. Incorruptible. I certainly wasn’t a member of the Dirty Blue like others I knew. Then, I met Drago Acerbi. I soon realized nothing could have prepared me for the consequences of falling in love with the enemy—a dangerous criminal whom I'm supposed to lock up. Yet, I was the one keeping our relationship a secret. Drago knew that. He also knew I had a job to do. What he didn’t know was that the baby I was protecting was his son. At least, he didn’t until my superior discovered our forbidden love affair—and I lost everything. My career. The man I had fallen for. The baby I’d grown to love. A life I didn’t know I wanted. I’d soon learn I wasn’t the only one harboring a secret they wanted to keep hidden from the world. That’s when I found out exactly who Drago Acerbi really was, and it sent a chill down my spine. This book has it all. Scandal. Action-packed suspense and drama. A plot twist that’ll have your jaw dropping. Protective hero vibes. And a kidnapping. It’s detective romance with light mafia/organized crime.

Shyness & Love
Author: Brian G. Gilmartin
Publisher: University Press of America
ISBN: 0761860606
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 349
Book Description
Shyness & Love covers the only major study conducted to date on social anxiety disorder as it is manifested in informal, unstructured, male/female dating and courtship situations. It focuses on the causes—both biomedical as well as situational—of “love-shyness” and the consequences for those afflicted with it. Gilmartin also discusses promising treatment modalities and what schools and communities can do to prevent severe love-shyness from developing in the first place. Shyness & Love examines the early family life as well as the peer group interactions of love-shy men. The book provides many statistical comparisons between the sampled love-shys and a comparison group of non-love-shy males of normal (but not superior) social self-confidence levels. These statistical comparisons allow for some informed speculations regarding the numerous interacting causes that underlie social phobia in informal, unstructured, heterosexual social situations. These statistical comparisons also provide the reader with some powerful suggestions regarding ways the American social structure (e.g., schools, family life, and communities) might be rearranged so that severe and intractable forms of love-shyness would never have an opportunity to develop in growing boys and teenagers in the first place. Since the publication of the first edition of this book, it has been determined that as many as forty percent of men afflicted with love-shyness are simultaneously comorbid for Asperger’s Syndrome, also known as high-functioning autism. As many as half of all love-shy males are comorbid for the “male lesbian syndrome,” sometimes also referred to as the “passive, non-competitive male syndrome.” This second edition contains a new foreword that presents the latest findings in love-shyness research. It is more concise than the original Shyness & Love, yet retains the most significant chapters.

The Possibility of Love
Author: Kathleen O'Dwyer
Publisher: Kathleen O'Dwyer
ISBN: 1443801186
Category : Electronic books
Languages : en
Pages : 266
Book Description
The Possibility of Love is an exploration of a concept close to the human heart. Grounded in the ordinary, everyday experiences of human living, the book provides an exploration of the diverse obstacles to the experience of love, the consequences of loveâ (TM)s absence, and the unquenchable desire for love which propels, influences and ultimately motivates much of human behaviour. The Possibility of Love poses the question: is love actually possible between human beings, or is it an ideal, a fantasy, an illusion, or a comforting aspiration which enables a palliative denial and distortion of the reality of human being? This expansive question is approached through an interdisciplinary analysis. The author addresses the question of loveâ (TM)s possibility as it is explored in a selection of literature from the disciplines of philosophy, psychoanalysis and poetry. The interdisciplinary nature of the study is based on the assertion of an interconnection between the three disciplines, and that this interconnection enables a unique and insightful exploration of the question of loveâ (TM)s possibility. Thus, the question is explored from diverse view-points, and also from different time-frames; convergences and divergences are noted and discussed, and conclusions are drawn from the ensuing findings. The book is essentially a philosophical analysis of an emotion that significantly impacts on human experience. It attests to the gradually increasing acknowledgement of the power of emotional experience in the search for knowledge, wisdom and truth. Thus, it is a uniquely honest exploration of human nature in contemporary times.

The Cinema of Paolo Sorrentino

Book Description
"Paolo Sorrentino, the director of Il Divo (2008) and The Great Beauty (2013) and the creator of the HBO series The Young Pope (2016) (and The New Pope (2019)), has in recent years emerged as one of the most popular figures in 21st century European filmmaking. Critics, however, remain sharply divided in their opinions of his films and what tradition his work can be placed in. Questions of what his stylistic relationship to Neorealism, the touchstone of virtually all Italian cinema, his local/national identity, and the posturing of his films vis a vis gender and a seemingly reactionary conceptualization of masculinity, his embracing or subverting of the role of art house "auteur," surround his films, with little consensus as to the answers. He is a confounding figure that seems to occupy contradictory roles in each of his films. In taking up the question of how best to contextualize Sorrentino's work, this book tracks his progressive departure from the localized world of Neapolitan and middlebrow "quality cinema" tropes in favor of a more expansive and transnational approach to filmmaking. Sorrentino's more recent work explicitly engages late-capitalist spaces and aesthetics and problematizes authorial interpretation, the idea of the "foreign" film, the supposed dichotomy between the "realist" ethos that has, in the past, dominated Italian cinema, and a "post-realist"/"post-modernist" emphasis on style. Critically, Kilbourn tracks two key themes through Sorretino's oeuvre: the idea of "impegno" - often translated as "commitment" and referring to the social activist aims of Neorealism - and the director's repeated attempts to create a distinctive kind of subjectivity. Though often thought to be mutually exclusive with the flamboyant and de-subjectivized style in much of contemporary art cinema, Sorrentino continues to find ways to merge these themes in his work"--
