Book Description
Gregory Shapiro - the American Netherlander - brings you a must-have alternative to the Dutch assimilation course. What is the true Dutch identity? Shapiro shares his hilariously clumsy assimilation into Dutch culture and blasts some well-known stereotypes along the way. The book includes questions from the real Dutch Assimilation Exam, whose logic Shapiro delightfully dissects to reveal the Dutch identity they'd rather you didn't know. How to Be Orange includes a photo essay of the most awkward Dutch product names and is illustrated by award-winning cartoonist Floor de Goede. How to Be Orange makes you redefine the Holland you thought you knew. Shapiro examines the dialogue from Pulp Fiction to find out how many 'little differences' have changed. He asks 'If Holland is the Drug Capital of the world, why is it so hard to get antibiotics?' And Shapiro tells how the Dutch tradition of Zwarte Piet made his children into little racists. If you're looking for an official guide to Dutch culture, this is not it. If you're looking for one man's completely subjective and utterly biased impression of Dutch culture, this book is for you.

For 20 years, Shapiro has catalogued his clumsy assimilation into Dutch culture with Boom Chicago Comedy Theater, Comedy Central and VARA HumorTV. Now, Shapiro teams up with illustrator Floor de Goede (Het Parool's 'Flo,' Dansen op de Vulkaan) to bring you the comedy show in tree-killing book form. If you're looking for an official guide to Dutch culture, this is not it. If you're looking for one man's completely subjective and utterly biased impression of Dutch culture, this is for you. Praise for theater tour 'How to Be Orange: Making the Dutch Take their own Assimilation Exam': 'Shapiro plays deftly with clichés, and he knows how to transcend them. He lands his jokes with precision... as he revels in ridiculing the clumsiness of the assimilation exam - and himself.' Het Parool 'What's impressive is that he's lived in Europe long enough to be wellinformed of local politics. What's more, he has developed a nicely nuanced perspective of his homeland.' de Volkskrant 'Greg shows us Nederland as an outsider sees it, which is hilarious. Yet - all the while - one can tell he is truly proud to be a Nederlander. A perfect match.' Netherlands Board of Tourism and Conventions Bron: Flaptekst, uitgeversinformatie.

Whiteshift

Whiteshift PDF Author: Eric Kaufmann
Publisher: Abrams
ISBN: 1468316982
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 814

Book Description
“This ambitious and provocative work . . . delves into white anxiety about the demographic decline of white populations in Western nations” (Publishers Weekly). “Whiteshift” is defined as the turbulent journey from a world of racially homogeneous white majorities to one of racially hybrid majorities. In this dada-driven study, political scientist Eric Kaufmann explores how these demographic changes across Western societies are transforming their politics. The early stages of this transformation have led to a populist disruption, tearing a path through the usual politics of left and right. If we want to avoid more radical political divisions, Kaufmann argues, we have to enable white conservatives as well as cosmopolitans to view whiteshift as a positive development. Kaufmann examines the evidence to explore ethnic change in North American and Western Europe. Tracing four ways of dealing with this transformation—fight, repress, flight, and join—he makes a persuasive call to move beyond empty talk about national identity. Deeply thought provoking, enriched with illustrative stories, and drawing on detailed and extraordinary survey, demographic, and electoral data, Whiteshift will redefine the way we discuss race in the twenty-first century.

Postcolonial Netherlands

Postcolonial Netherlands PDF Author: Gert Oostindie
Publisher: Amsterdam University Press
ISBN: 9089643532
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 290

Book Description
"The Netherlands is home to one million citizens with roots in the former colonies Indonesia, Suriname and the Antilles. Entitlement to Dutch citizenship, pre-migration acculturation in Dutch language and culture as well as a strong rhetorical argument ('We are here because you were there') were strong assets of the first generation. This 'postcolonial bonus' indeed facilitated their integration. In the process, the initial distance to mainstream Dutch culture diminished. Postwar Dutch society went through serious transformations. Its once lily white population now includes two million non-Western migrants and the past decade witnessed heated debates about multiculturalism. The most important debates about the postcolonial migrant communities centeracknowledgmentgement and the inclusion of colonialism and its legacies in the national memorial culture. This resulted in state-sponsored gestures, ranging from financial compensation to monuments. The ensemble of such gestures reflect a guilt-ridden and inconsistent attempt to 'do justice' to the colonial past and to Dutch citizens with colonial roots. Postcolonial Netherlands is the first scholarly monograph to address these themes in an internationally comparative framework. Upon its publication in the Netherlands (2010) the book elicited much praise, but also serious objections to some of the author's theses, such as his prediction about the diminishing relevance of postcolonial roots"--Publisher's description.
