Jo holds a M.A. in Education with an emphasis in Equestrian Studies (1986) and a B.S. in Equestrian Studies with a minor in Education (1986- graduating magna cum laude). Both of her academic degrees are from Salem International University, West Virginia. She also holds a Riding Master Diploma, 1975 from Meredith Manor School of Horsemanship where she was named to the Who’s Who List for Outstanding Students in American Vocational and Technical Schools, 1975. As an administrator, Jo was formerly Dean of Meredith Manor School of Horsemanship, 1980-1985. She has a strong professional background in teacher education, program administration and curriculum development. While teaching at this internationally known school for 10 years, she focused on the development of the jumping and teaching departments. As former Vice-President for the United States Combined Training Association, Jo served on the executive committee from 1987-1989 and the board of governors from 1984-1989. During her tenure, she developed the AHSA-USCTA Combined Training Officials seminars as well as carried out the educational seminars for the general membership including beginning the USCTA Event Colleges. In 1988 she received the USCTA’s Governor’s Cup Award for outstanding contributions to the sport of Eventing. As an educator, Jo has provided equestrian education to riders and instructors, nationally, since 1975. From 1989 through 2002 she provided an on-going education program for horseback riding instructors focusing on improving their teaching effectiveness. She has also developed a working student program for Shenandoah Farm of Staunton, Virginia on training and breeding, and advised Wetherbee Farm of Boxboro Massachusetts on developing their Fitness by Riding Program. As a rider, competitor and athlete, Jo has trained and competed through the Advanced Level in Eventing and the Prix St. Georges Level in Dressage. She earned her USDF Bronze and Silver Medal Rider Awards during the late 1970’s. She has also been long listed during the 1980’s for The Eventing Olympic Team.

International Rider I - Foundation Horsemanship - The International Riding Academy offers four main levels of horsemanship. These levels are progressive and designed for riders 12 years and older, however there are open to riders of any age. Riders not yet ready for this program and try the Young Rider program with four easier levels. This program is not designed to replace a riding coach or instructor, rather to just aid in riding lessons. In fact, the program can help as a guideline in the coach's riding lesson program. As well, the levels give the student a proper horsemanship skill base and education in stable management. Graduates of the program can go on to become Stable Managers, Horse Trainers and Coaches! Each level consists of a Work book and informative DVDs. Testing is open book and all multiple choice. A passing grade is 60%. Mounted work is done by video testing and passing grade is 55%. There are several tests for each level, the majority will be theory tests and there will always be one riding theory test. Mounted videos are: Assessment, Flat and Gymnastic (except Rider I). Classical Horsemanship is the foundation of all disciplines, therefore it is also used as a base test for the levels, however not everyone enjoys English riding; therefore, there is also a Western option. A rider may use one to several horses for testing and there is no time limit. The rider just needs to be a current member and enrolled in the proper riding level class. Upon completion a rider will be issued a certificate. Tests can be sent in anytime. Riding tests are done once per semester with four semesters throughout the year. Danish award ribbons are awarded for each mounted test. The rider level program is closely structured to the theories of the four great riding schools of classical horsemanship, Vienna, Jerez, Lisbon and Saumur, as well as from some of the world's top riders of all time. The systemic levels increase in difficulty and intensity. Rider I is for all ages who wish to study ground work, safety and the riding basics that should not be skipped by even the experienced rider. Even though Rider I is the beginning stage of horsemanship and considered an introduction, it covers a lot of theory of the aids and gaits in order to set the rider's education for the next level up. Riders learn and show the basics of riding walk trot with some aids. The rider should have an independent seat and not balance on the horse's mouth. Riders must show safety skills and confidence in the saddle as well as on the ground. Sometimes the aid of a coach is allowed in the tests, however it must be predominantly the rider performing all tasks and issuing orders for how to help if need be, such as hold the halter, or help lift the saddle (should the rider by very small or young). But excessive coaching and outside interference is prohibited, especially in the Classical tests. Tack can vary in styles, but not be mixed and matched. For example, an English rider should use all English tack and attire. Rider clothing can be academic. Please, refer to the Disciplines for proper tack and attire. The horse's turn-out is important, however the horse does not need to be clipped or braided. An effort must be shown to have the horse clean and presentable.
