Book Description
Writing is arguably one of the most challenging skills to master because it requires fluency and accuracy of micro level skills (e.g. handwriting, spelling, capitalization, punctuation) within genre specific macro level skills (e.g. vocabulary, cohesion, coherence, audience). Further, writing development is often intricately linked to reading acquisition, therefore, development in one area (e.g. reading) typically correlates with development in the other (e.g. writing). Dr. Kumar Shyam, the author has been in the field of medicines and surgery for the last about 30 years. While he has practical experience of treating patients suffering from various diseases, Covid-19 is a disease which has hit everybody across the globe so suddenly that not every aspect of this is clear to the experts even now. It has already taken the shape of a pandemic and the medical fraternity, scientists and experts are busy to find out a proper treatment plan for the disease. The author has made an earnest effort to deal with issues which have come up before the mankind as a result of a sudden outbreak of this pandemic including the real issue of its origin at a place with which everyone is familiar now, a city known as Wuhan in China, in a really interesting manner and in the shape of a plot giving insights into all the facts combining with them the fiction part. Although he is in the field of medicines, the way he has narrated the plot, it puts him into the category of regular and prolific writers. The mixture of facts with imagination is beautiful and amazing, giving the Book the status of a Class Reading We congratulate Dr. Kumar Shyam for the work done and feel our Readers will find the Book so engrossing that they will not leave the Book without going through it entirely in one go. "Inspired by true events happening around the world related to COVID-19, the book definitely puts across one of the most intriguing conspiracy theory and is worth reading"-- Sayeed Ansari Senior Anchor, Aajtak, TV Today Group The narrative captures the essence of the viral pandemic a fascinating medical fiction. -- Dr. Jayant Sharma Honorary Secretary, IMA, U.P. The Premonition

The Premonition PDF Author: Michael Lewis
Publisher: National Geographic Books
ISBN: 1324035536
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER For those who could read between the lines, the censored news out of China was terrifying. But the president insisted there was nothing to worry about. Fortunately, we are still a nation of skeptics. Fortunately, there are those among us who study pandemics and are willing to look unflinchingly at worst-case scenarios. Michael Lewis’s taut and brilliant nonfiction thriller pits a band of medical visionaries against the wall of ignorance that was the official response of the Trump administration to the outbreak of COVID-19. The characters you will meet in these pages are as fascinating as they are unexpected. A thirteen-year-old girl’s science project on transmission of an airborne pathogen develops into a very grown-up model of disease control. A local public-health officer uses her worm’s-eye view to see what the CDC misses, and reveals great truths about American society. A secret team of dissenting doctors, nicknamed the Wolverines, has everything necessary to fight the pandemic: brilliant backgrounds, world-class labs, prior experience with the pandemic scares of bird flu and swine flu…everything, that is, except official permission to implement their work. Michael Lewis is not shy about calling these people heroes for their refusal to follow directives that they know to be based on misinformation and bad science. Even the internet, as crucial as it is to their exchange of ideas, poses a risk to them. They never know for sure who else might be listening in.

The Pandemic of Argumentation

The Pandemic of Argumentation PDF Author: Steve Oswald
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 3030910172
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 367

Book Description
This open access book addresses communicative aspects of the current COVID-19 pandemic as well as the epidemic of misinformation from the perspective of argumentation theory. Argumentation theory is uniquely placed to understand and account for the challenges of public reason as expressed through argumentative discourse. The book thus focuses on the extent to which the forms, norms and functions of public argumentation have changed in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic. This question is investigated along the three main research lines of the COST Action project CA 17132: European network for Argumentation and Public PoLicY analysis (APPLY): descriptive, normative, and prescriptive. The volume offers a broad range of contributions which treat argumentative phenomena that are directly related to the changes in public discourse in the wake of the outburst of COVID-19. The volume additionally places particular emphasis on expert argumentation, given (i) the importance expert discourse has had over the last two years, and (ii) the challenges that expert argumentation has faced in the public sphere as a result of scientific uncertainty and widespread misinformation. Contributions are divided into three groups, which (i) examine various features and aspects of public and institutional discourse about the COVID-19 pandemic, (ii) scrutinize the way health policies have been discussed, debated, attacked and defended in the public sphere, and (iii) consider a range of proposals meant to improve the quality of public discourse, and public deliberation in particular, in such a way that concrete proposals for argumentative literacy will be brought to light. Overall, this volume constitutes a timely inquiry into all things argumentative in pandemic discourse. This volume is of interest to a broad readership including philosophers, linguists, communication and legal scholars, and members of the wider public who seek to better understand the discourse surrounding communicative phenomena in times of crisis. COST (European Cooperation in Science and Technology) is a funding organisation for research and innovation networks. For more information: www.cost.eu

ISBN: 1786223422
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 124

Book Description
Gardening and growing has never been so popular, nor has the awareness of why we need to do it been so acute. When Hazel Southam took on an overgrown and neglected strip of ground in a local council allotment, she had nothing more than beginner’s enthusiasm and fond memories of her late father’s passion for growing. In This Blessed Plot she relates with humour, wry observation and poignancy the story of her first year as an allotment holder. With Hazel, we feel the sheer effort of clearing the ground of debris and patiently nourishing the exhausted soil, the camaraderie and unexpected kindness of strangers, the pleasures of mending and making do, the miracle of seeds sprouting, and the problem of what do to with so much lettuce. This Blessed Plot speaks to the zeitgeist that is gardening and mental and emotional health. But it goes further and reflects gently on spiritual health too, on friendship, generosity, wellbeing, and our mutual dependence on creation and each other. Amusing, perceptive and wise, This Blessed Plot is for anyone who has an interest in gardening.

Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 382

Book Description
This book is about building platforms for pandemic prediction. It provides an overview of probabilistic prediction for pandemic modeling based on a data-driven approach. It also provides guidance on building platforms with currently available technology using tools such as R, Shiny, and interactive plotting programs. The focus is on the integration of statistics and computing tools rather than on an in-depth analysis of all possibilities on each side. Readers can follow different reading paths through the book, depending on their needs. The book is meant as a basis for further investigation of statistical modelling, implementation tools, monitoring aspects, and software functionalities. Features: A general but parsimonious class of models to perform statistical prediction for epidemics, using a Bayesian approach Implementation of automated routines to obtain daily prediction results How to interactively visualize the model results Strategies for monitoring the performance of the predictions and identifying potential issues in the results Discusses the many decisions required to develop and publish online platforms Supplemented by an R package and its specific functionalities to model epidemic outbreaks The book is geared towards practitioners with an interest in the development and presentation of results in an online platform of statistical analysis of epidemiological data. The primary audience includes applied statisticians, biostatisticians, computer scientists, epidemiologists, and professionals interested in learning more about epidemic modelling in general, including the COVID-19 pandemic, and platform building. The authors are professors at the Statistics Department at Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais. Their research records exhibit contributions applied to a number of areas of Science, including Epidemiology. Their research activities include books published with Chapman and Hall/CRC and papers in high quality journals.
