Healing Our History 3rd Edition

Healing Our History 3rd Edition PDF Author: Robert Consedine
Publisher: Penguin Random House New Zealand Limited
ISBN: 1742532675
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 393

Book Description
A powerful and humane book, Healing Our History eschews rhetoric and cuts to the true story of race relations in New Zealand. The Treaty of Waitangi is the most important document in New Zealand's history. Current Treaty issues and Maori/Pakeha relationships can only be understood within the wider story of New Zealand. As we understand and honour our history, we can acknowledge the need for restoration, healing and right relationships. The public response to previous editions of this bestselling book by Robert Consedine and his daughter Joanna Consedine has been strong and overwhelmingly positive. This 2012 edition updates and expands on the critical issues: the foreshore and seabed debate, Maori access to political power, and the emergence of the Maori Party; the remarkable growth of the Maori economy, self-determination, Maori language and the developments in Maori education; constitutional issues, and the benefits of the Treaty settlement process. New Zealand and all New Zealanders have much to celebrate—and many challenges ahead. Drawing on Robert's unique experience as a leading Treaty educator, the powerful message of this book illustrates how each and every New Zealander across all cultures can discover a new sense of personal and national identity, grounded in an authentic Treaty relationship. 'This is one of those books New Zealand needs.' --Michael King 'Based on years of Treaty work experience, [this book] is essential reading.' --Claudia Orange

Alternative Healing in American History

Alternative Healing in American History PDF Author: Michael Shally-Jensen
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing USA
ISBN:
Category : Health & Fitness
Languages : en
Pages : 490

Book Description
This book examines alternative healing practices in American popular culture. From traditional folk approaches to more recent developments, it discusses the rise and fall of more than 100 popular approaches to addressing both physical ailments and mental health needs. Offering insightful accounts of everything from aging prevention to voodoo & Santería, Alternative Healing in American History: An Encyclopedia from Acupuncture to Yoga situates each popular approach in the history and culture of health and wellness in America. Moreover, the book shows that "orthodox" medicine and unconventional approaches may have more in common than many people think, because both are subject to the changing nature of the medical understanding and the strength of their appeal to consumers. While the main focus is on remedies lying outside the medical mainstream, the book also highlights how many widely accepted therapeutic treatments of the past—for example, "the water cure" (hydrotherapy) or lobotomy (psychosurgery)—fell out of favor and were quickly forgotten. Besides examining popular healing techniques, the book also explores the changing nature of the medical marketplace and how once-standard treatments (e.g., leeching, psychoanalysis) have had their ups and downs. The book comprises five chronological sections covering time periods from pre-1900 to the present.

Hexenkopf: History, Healing, and Hexerei Third Edition

Hexenkopf: History, Healing, and Hexerei Third Edition PDF Author: Ned D. Heindel
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781877701207

Languages : en
Pages : 202

Book Description
Hexenkopf (witch's head) Rock, a 761-ft pinnacle peak (40.6179° N, 75.2413° W) on the easternmost end of the Reading Prong in Northampton County, Pennsylvania, has a two- century association with Pennsylvania German mysticism, witchcraft, and folk-medical healing. This book collects published legends, oral traditions, herbal concoctions, and artifactual materials telling the story of two dynasties of powwow healers -- the Saylors and the Wilhelms. These unorthodox folk healers used the strangely shaped rock as the acceptor of disease, sickness, hexes, and adversities transferred from their suffering patients by occult chants and prescription formulae into the Rock itself. The unique geology of the Hexenkopf Ridge and its spectacularly diverse flora and fauna, described in this book, serve to enrich the historical linkage to Pennsylvania German hexerei.

The Healing Gods

The Healing Gods PDF Author: Candy Gunther Brown
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0199985804
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 715

Book Description
The question typically asked about complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is whether it works. However, an issue of equal or greater significance is why it is supposed to work. The Healing Gods: Complementary and Alternative Medicine in Christian America explains how and why CAM entered the American biomedical mainstream and won cultural acceptance, even among evangelical and other theologically conservative Christians, despite its ties to non-Christian religions and the lack of scientific evidence of its efficacy and safety. Before the 1960s, most of the practices Candy Gunther Brown considers-yoga, chiropractic, acupuncture, Reiki, Therapeutic Touch, meditation, martial arts, homeopathy, anticancer diets-were dismissed as medically and religiously questionable. These once-suspect health practices gained approval as they were re-categorized as non-religious (though generically spiritual) health-care, fitness, or scientific techniques. Although CAM claims are similar to religious claims, CAM gained cultural legitimacy because people interpret it as science instead of religion. Holistic health care raises ethical and legal questions of informed consent, consumer protection, and religious establishment at the center of biomedical ethics, tort law, and constitutional law. The Healing Gods confronts these issues, getting to the heart of values such as personal autonomy, self-determination, religious equality, and religious voluntarism.
