Book Description
In quilts, as in life, few things are more important than color. Color evokes a mood, color sets a contrast, color is the spark that can make the everyday - extraordinary. Color Continuum is an exploration of how different approaches to creating a unique palette for a quilt can imbue it with emotion or suggest anything from an everyday scene to a classic painting. In no 2. polychromatic, pure white light is split into its intrinsic components: the rainbow. This most elemental of natural phenomena provides, with a basis deep in optics, provides the most fundamental organization of the color spectrum. Yet at the same time its ends are found deep in our collective imagination, evoking a powerful sense of wonder and beauty. It's no surprise, then, to find that it can be applied in innumerable ways to give the same fantastic charm, simultaneously peaceful and lively, to our creations. This volume explores this idea, imbuing a set of five quilts with every portion of the spectrum short of a pot of gold.

Introduction to Optics I

Introduction to Optics I PDF Author: Ksenia Dolgaleva
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 3031023870
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 97

Book Description
This book, Introduction to Optics I: Interaction of Light with Matter, is the first book in a series of four covering the introduction to optics and optical components. The author's targeted goal for this series is to provide clarity for the reader by addressing common difficulties encountered while trying to understand various optics concepts. This first book is organized and written in a way that is easy to follow, and is meant to be an excellent first book on optics, eventually leading the way for further study. Those with technical backgrounds as well as undergraduate students studying optics for the first time can benefit from this book series. The current book includes three chapters on light and its characteristics (Chapter 1), on matter from the standpoint of optics (Chapter 2), and on the interaction of light with matter (Chapter 3). Among the characteristics of light, the ones characterizing its speed, color, and strength are covered. The polarization of light will be covered in the next book of the series, where we discuss optical components. Chapter 2 discusses various atomic and molecular transitions activated by light (optical transitions). Different kinds of natural bulk material media are described: crystalline and amorphous, atomic and molecular, conductive and insulating. Chapter 3 on the interaction of light with matter describes naturally occurring phenomena such as absorption, dispersion, and nonlinear optical interactions. The discussion is provided for the natural bulk optical materials only. The interfaces between various materials will be covered in the next book on optical components. The following three books of the series are planned as follows. In the second book, we will focus on passive optical components such as lenses, mirrors, guided-wave, and polarization optical devices. In the third book, we will discuss laser sources and optical amplifiers. Finally, the fourth book in the series will cover optoelectronic devices, such as semiconductor light sources and detectors.

Transverse Disciplines in Metrology

Transverse Disciplines in Metrology PDF Author: French College of Metrology
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 111862341X
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 634

Book Description
Based on The International Metrology Congress meeting, this reference examines the evolution of metrology, and its applications in industry, environment and safety, health and medicine, economy and quality, and new information and communication technologies; details the improvement of measurement procedures to guarantee the quality of products and processes; and discusses the development of metrology linked to innovating technologies. The themes of the Congress (quality and reliability of measurement, measurement uncertainties, calibration, verification, accreditation, sensory metrology, regulations and legal metrology) are developed either in a general way or applied to a specific economic sector or to a specific scientific field.

Lexicalization patterns in color naming

Lexicalization patterns in color naming PDF Author: Ida Raffaelli
Publisher: John Benjamins Publishing Company
ISBN: 9027262128
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 437

Book Description
The volume presents sixteen chapters focused on lexicalization patterns used in color naming in a variety of languages. Although previous studies have dealt with categorization and perceptual salience of color terms, few studies have been consistently conducted in order to investigate phonological, morphological, syntactic, and semantic devices languages use to form color terms. The aim of this volume is to approach color data from a relativist and typological perspective and to address some novel viewpoints in the research of color terms, such as: (a) the focus on language structure per se in the study of lexicalization data; (b) investigation of inter- and intra-language structural variation; (c) culture and language contact as reflected in language structure. Topics of this book have a broad appeal to researchers working in the fields of linguistics, anthropology, sociology, and psychology.
