The viability of crickets as an alternative food source to beef overconsumption

The viability of crickets as an alternative food source to beef overconsumption PDF Author: Anthony Li

Book Description
Essay from the year 2016 in the subject Environmental Sciences, , language: English, abstract: Among some of the leading current global issues is world hunger. Many attempts have been made at mitigating or even solving the problem, but progress has been slow. Recently, there has been increasing awareness about eating insects, known as entomophagy, to solve world hunger. In 2008, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations published a report discussing how insects could be the solution to achieve food and feed security. I found the report intriguing, noting that entomophagy now had considerable credibility with the United Nations having thoroughly examined the notion. With entomophagy, I noticed not only global applications with hunger and environmental issues, but also potential local applications in nutrition and economics. I narrowed down the enormous topic of entomophagy to two organisms: the cricket and the cow. I thus investigated the question: Through the lenses of biology and environmental systems, are crickets viable as a solution to counteract the overconsumption of beef to prevent a potential global hunger epidemic? With different avenues of research, I decided to separately study biology and environmental systems. I found the biological aspect most interesting, but I also recognized the importance of the environmental factor. Biological elements were examined in the first half of the investigation, with focus on nutrition, health risks and efficiency comparisons. Environmental systems elements were covered in the second half by looking at emissions, ecological footprint and impact on nearby ecosystems. Overall, there were noticeable benefits of introducing crickets into the global food industry as a substitute to beef. Not only could they rival beef in nutrition, but also were more efficient and posed little human health risk. In addition, the emissions and ecological footprint imposed by crickets were considerably lower than those of beef, with minimal potential impact on nearby ecosystems.

Category : Sports & Recreation

Book Description
For cricket enthusiasts there is nothing to match the meaningful contests and excitement generated by the game’s subtle shifts in play. Conversely, huge swathes of the world’s population find cricket the most obscure and bafflingly impenetrable of sports. The Changing Face of Cricket attempts to account for this paradox. The Changing Face of Cricket provides an overview of the various ways in which social scientists have analyzed the game’s cultural impact. The book’s international analysis encompasses Australia, the Caribbean, England, India, Ireland, South Africa, Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe. Its interdisciplinary approach allies anthropology, history, literary criticism, political studies and sociology with contributions from cricket administrators and journalists. The collection addresses historical and contemporary issues such as gender equality, global sports development, the impact of cricket mega-events, and the growing influence of commercial and television interests culminating in the Twenty20 revolution. Whether one loves or hates the game, understands what turns square legs into fine legs, or how mid-offs become silly, The Changing Face of Cricket will enlighten the reader on the game’s cultural contours and social impact and prove to be the essential reader in cricket studies. This book was published as a special issue of Sport in Society.

The Complete Cricket Breeding Manual

The Complete Cricket Breeding Manual PDF Author: Glenn Kvassay

Book Description
Low Maintenance Cricket Breeding is finally a Reality!! The number one reason 98% of people give up breeding crickets after a few months, is they choose the wrong breeding method. Most people use conventional methods which require constant spraying, feeding and cleaning….and simple give up as it’s too much effort. To make things worse, pests take over due to lack of maintenance and the whole system crashes. These methods are better suited commercial production…not feeding one or two bearded dragons. Our low maintenance systems are very different with automated feeding and water stations; a detritus collection system that does the maintenance for you; along with a number of other innovations… The result is smarter low maintenance, consistent and productive breeding methods for both private and commercial applications. The reality is that crickets can now be bred with less time than standing in line at your pet store. Now there is a true alternative which makes cricket breeding available to everyone!! WHY OUR METHODS ARE VERY DIFFERERENT After more than a decade of commercial production and experimentation, we have pioneered revolutionary techniques that have slashed maintenance, eliminated offensive odor and doubled production. How would you like automated systems that ; • Needs no active management; • Collects waste for you; • Requires only 5 minutes maintenance every 7-10 days (less time than standing in line at the pet store) • Food/ water dispensers that attends to your insects for 14 days or more; • Systems so productive that the average family will be able to feed 4-12 bearded dragons (depending of insect feeding rate) just from their scrap vegetables; • That’s over $1400 each year completely free…. good income for the family or teach your kids to build their own business. • Best of all they are easy to build, and materials are made from recycled materials or from your hardware. Breeding your own feeder insects has never been easier with the world’s most comprehensive and well researched feeder insects guides (with hundreds of photos), complementary Skype video training along with Email support. Our methods are also available on video at a click of a button. (full details on our website www.wildlifehub.com). HOW DO OUR SYSTEMS WORK... In a nut shell, we have created two separate zones within a single container (conventional techniques require up to 6 separate containers); one high humidity area ideal for breeding; and a lower humidity area for housing and food/water. We have also developed a unique detritus collection system which collects the waste and prevents contamination of breeding substrate and food areas. This makes cleaning a breeze, eliminates odor and disease, increases egg viability and increases cricket production. We have water/food dispersers which do the feeds for you, even when your on holidays! Unlike other methods which need to be actively managed (daily spraying, and moving pinheads to new containers) our systems run themselves ?. And our cockroach breeding systems are equally unique at reducing maintenance and smells (also available on Amazon). Now you can breed both species with ease. THE MOST COMPREHENSIVE GUIDES... This manual sets the benchmark for cricket production and contains more than 164 pages (240 color photos) that cover’s every aspect of private and commercial production in detail. That’s more than twice the size of any other book on the market. We have overhauled every aspect of cricket production including; container design, breeding, food and water requirements; making food and water dispensers; heating/storage; maintenance/pest management, cleaning; grading/selling, lots and lots more. COMMERCIAL PRODUCTION EXPERIENCE…Turn an Expense Into Income!! We have bred crickets and cockroaches commercially for 10 years to wildlife parks, zoos, pet stores, wildlife rescue clubs, and...
