Pages : 150
Book Description
This excellent staff training book contains over 250 detailed jojutsu illustrations with introduction, biography, notes and insights. Legend has it that the Shinto Muso Ryu style of Jojutsu was founded after Muso Gonnosuke Katsuyoshi (17th century samurai) lost a duel. Katsuyoshi traveled on his musha shugyo to test what he had mastered in Tenshin Shoden Katori Shinto Ryu. He was unprepared for his loss to Miyamoto Musashi (1584-1645) who was an expert swordsman and ronin, credited with winning over 60 duels. After his loss, Katsuyoshi withdrew into seclusion, practicing swordsmanship and performing purification rituals in an effort to perfect his technique. Fujita Seiko (1898-1966) was a Japanese martial artist and military instructor who many consider to be the last Koga Ninjutsu master. During the Wolrd War 2 he taught special training in the Army Academy of Nakano.

Pages : 172
Book Description
Miyamoto Musashi, famed for his two-sword style, was a master of Shuriken. Kanji Naruse, the martial arts researcher and instructor of Negishi School Shuriken, published his book "Shuriken" in 1941. He devoted two chapters to discussing Miyamoto Musashi and his use of Shuriken. The first chapter of his surprising book discusses the origins of Musashi's Shuriken art and quotes various historical documents as well as the Okura Monument, a stone slab etched with a 1000 Kanji history of Musashi's life produced by his adopted son Iori. It also discusses Musashi's surprisingly influential connection to the famous Yagyu family and how a duel between Musashi and a member of the Yagyu family caused the Yagyu to develop new techniques to defend against an opponent throwing a Shuriken. The second chapter is Naruse's interpretation of the Shuriken techniques employed by Musashi in duels. The next chapters will look at documents related to the Chishin Ryu, New Learning School, a Shuriken school that was founded by the descendants of Miyamoto Musashi. These documents were all transcribed by the early 20th century martial artist and researcher Fujita Seiko. A section of a recently authenticated work by Miyamoto Musashi is also included. This document gives specific instructions regarding how to throw Shuriken according to Musashi. Finally, documents related to the Yagyu school mentioning Shuriken will be introduced. This book is a bilingual edition with both Japanese and English.

Samurai and Ninja
Author: Antony Cummins
Publisher: Tuttle Publishing
ISBN: 146291506X
Category : Sports & Recreation
Languages : en
Pages : 225
Book Description
The myths of the noble Samurai and the sinister Ninja are filled with romantic fantasy and fallacy. Samurai and Ninja expert Antony Cummins shatters the myths and exposes the true nature of these very real--and very lethal--medieval Japanese warriors. The Samurai and Ninja were, in fact, brutal killing machines trained in torture and soaked in machismo. Many were skilled horsemen and sword-fighting specialists, while others were masters of deception and sabotage. Some fought for loyalty, others for personal gain. What these warriors all shared in common was their unflinching personal bravery, skill and brutality. In Samurai and Ninja, Cummins separates myth from reality and shows why the Japanese were the greatest warriors of all time: He describes the Samurai and the Ninja as they really were in earlier times when battles raged across Japan--not in later times when war became obsolete and Japanese warriors became philosophers, scholars and courtiers. He describes the social context of the day and the feudal world into which the warriors were trained to fight and die for their lords. He exposes the essentially brutal nature of warfare in medieval Japan. This book is illuminated by many rare Japanese manuscripts and texts which are translated into English for the very first time.
