Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 353
Book Description
Named one of the 100 greatest film books of all time by The Hollywood Reporter, this singular, warm-hearted, inspiring look at life itself is "the best thing Mr. Ebert has ever written" (Janet Maslin, New York Times). "To make ourselves unhappy is where all crime starts. We must try to contribute joy to the world. That is true no matter what our problems, our health, our circumstances. We must try. I didn't always know this, and am happy I lived long enough to find it out." Roger Ebert was the best-known film critic of his time. He began reviewing films for the Chicago Sun-Times in1967, and was the first film critic ever to win a Pulitzer Prize. He appeared on television for four decades. In 2006, complications from thyroid cancer treatment resulted in the loss of his abi)lity to eat, drink, or speak. But with the loss of his voice, Ebert became a more prolific and influential writer. And in Life Itself he told the full, dramatic story of his life and career. In this candid, personal history, Ebert chronicled it all: his loves, losses, and obsessions; his struggle and recovery from alcoholism; his marriage; his politics; and his spiritual beliefs. He wrote about his years at the Sun-Times, his colorful newspaper friends, and his life-changing collaboration with Gene Siskel. He shared his insights into movie stars and directors like John Wayne and Martin Scorsese. This is a story that only Roger Ebert could tell, filled with the same deep insight, dry wit, and sharp observations that his readers have long cherished,

Success Is a Calling!
Author: Ashbel Vudzijena
Publisher: AuthorHouse
ISBN: 1481737899
Category : Self-Help
Languages : en
Pages : 157
Book Description
Many are the plans in a man's heart, but it is the LORD's purpose that prevails. (Proverbs 19:21) Its high time we realize that in the same way that life, in its broader version is a calling, success is similarly a calling. Nothing stands in the way of your calling, even a thousand troops! You cant even stand in the way of your own calling. Jonah failed to stop himself from succeeding. No matter how much you try, your success can only materialize if God wills. On the other hand, no matter how hard you try to avoid it, you will succeed if it is the plan of God for you to succeed. He will lead you to places, people, circumstances, colleges, cities and villages that ensure your success. Among the various options life seems to offer, the best and only viable option is the plan of God for your life as an individual. The plan of God is ever inviting you towards the direction of your calling. If you dont look for success, it will still look for you if it is your calling for you to succeed in a particular way. This book helps you to rely on Gods plan for every minute of your life. Seek to find out this plan. Everyone has a calling. You have a calling upon your life. A calling makes success inevitable, unavoidable. Success is not corruption or nepotism. It is not a beautiful plan, a sound education or an insightful workshop. All factors can only propel you or apply in your life if there is a calling for that kind of success, first and foremost. Let your own plan give way to the plan of God for your life. Your destiny is guaranteed. A desire for success is like a smell. When you detect it you know the source is around. You can tell the level of success you will attain by the natural, not artificial, desire you have for it. Your desire does not give you a future. Instead it is the guaranteed future that gives you a desire for it. A desire is therefore a signal not the fuel towards the success that you are guaranteed by way of a calling. Read this book and realize that ultimate success is unconscious. It is a calling.

Life Itself
Author: Robert Rosen
Publisher: Columbia University Press
ISBN: 9780231075640
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 324
Book Description
Why are living things alive? As a theoretical biologist, Robert Rosen saw this as the most fundamental of all questions-and yet it had never been answered satisfactorily by science. The answers to this question would allow humanity to make an enormous leap forward in our understanding of the principles at work in our world. For centuries, it was believed that the only scientific approach to the question "What is life?" must proceed from the Cartesian metaphor (organism as machine). Classical approaches in science, which also borrow heavily from Newtonian mechanics, are based on a process called "reductionism." The thinking was that we can better learn about an intricate, complicated system (like an organism) if we take it apart, study the components, and then reconstruct the system-thereby gaining an understanding of the whole. However, Rosen argues that reductionism does not work in biology and ignores the complexity of organisms. Life Itself, a landmark work, represents the scientific and intellectual journey that led Rosen to question reductionism and develop new scientific approaches to understanding the nature of life. Ultimately, Rosen proposes an answer to the original question about the causal basis of life in organisms. He asserts that renouncing the mechanistic and reductionistic paradigm does not mean abandoning science. Instead, Rosen offers an alternate paradigm for science that takes into account the relational impacts of organization in natural systems and is based on organized matter rather than on particulate matter alone. Central to Rosen's work is the idea of a "complex system," defined as any system that cannot be fully understood by reducing it to its parts. In this sense, complexity refers to the causal impact of organization on the system as a whole. Since both the atom and the organism can be seen to fit that description, Rosen asserts that complex organization is a general feature not just of the biosphere on Earth-but of the universe itself.

Praise Be to the Plus-Sized Sister
Author: Kamané Malvo Marshall
Publisher: Xlibris Corporation
ISBN: 1465322469
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 240
Book Description
Book Summary Praise Be to the Plus-Sized Sister is a semi-autobiographical tale of seven women from the San Francisco Bay Area who are connected to each other by six-degrees-of-separation. Seeking redemption from heartbreak, infidelity, poor choices, rejection, self-sabotage, low self-esteem, and emotional and physical abuse, Natasha, Zinnia, Israel, Addison, Celeste, Lila, and Liberty endure the social and psychological pressures of being full-figured black women in a thin obsessed society. With wit, intelligence, glamour and style, and a twofold portion of sass, these soulful sisters possess faith in the midst of the storm, hope when tomorrow is not promised, and strength of character when giving up seems easier than doing the right thing. Praise Be to the Plus-Sized Sister is made up of six stories of redemption: Out of the Mind of Israel Ming, Daddys Girls, The Vibrator Virgin, Count it all joy, Saving Sister Jared, and Forgiving Liberty. Beautifully flawed, audaciously determined, and at times downright hilarious, Praise Be to the Plus-Sized Sister represents a new voice, an underrepresented story about the struggle of a unique minority group that has been misunderstood for a long time. Written in the rich and colorful language of the African American experience, by no means is this book tame. It deals with real issues women endure in modern day society, paying special attention to plus-sized African American females who confront prejudice and discrimination on three fronts: race, gender, and size. With messages of hope, self-acceptance, and second chances, Kamane Malvo Marshall encourages her readers to keep the faith no matter what.
