Book Description
Excerpt from The History of the Province of Moray, Vol. 2 of 3: Comprising the Counties of Elgin and Nairn, the Greater Part of the County of Inverness, and a Portion of the County of Banff, All Called the Province of Moray Before There Was a Division Into Counties The Elgin Pillar was discovered in 1823 when the streets were under repair, lying about two feet below the surface in a horizontal position, as if it had been thrown down there by accident, a little to the north-east of the old Church of St. Giles. Nothing whatever is known of its previous history. It is now preserved in the Cathedral. This pillar is evidently incomplete, a part having been broken off from one end of it. It is now 6 feet in length, 25 in breadth, and 1 foot thick, composed of a reddish grey granite, very like that of Aberdeen shire. The base of this stone is of less breadth than the top.
